Threads was released on July 5. (Image: Meta) Mark Zuckerberg has revealed that Twitter rival Threads will soon receive a major update that will introduce a search function accessible via the web. He said the update will arrive “in the next few weeks.”
The Meta CEO praised Threads in a post on Friday, saying that “the community here is on the trajectory I expect to build a vibrant long term app.”
The microblogging platform currently does have a search function but it’s limited to looking up other users alone currently. X’s (formerly Twitter) search, meanwhile, is far more elaborate and lets users search for posts alongside displaying trending topics.
Threads was launched in early with much fanfare and became the fastest to reach 100 million downloads. The app attracted users who were unhappy with Elon Musk’s handling of Twitter, as well as regular Instagram users. It’s currently playing catch-up with its Musk-owned rival and also plans to introduce direct messages (DMs) option, enabling users to chat with friends and followers directly.
Zuckerberg expressed his optimism about Threads’ future on Meta’s earnings call last week. He said the app was developed by a small team and that Meta would not monetise it until it grew bigger and more established.
“Lots of work ahead but excited about the team’s pace of shipping,” Zuckerberg wrote on Friday.
