Just days after Google announced the Pixel Tablet at its annual developer conference, the tech giant seems to be rolling out split keyboard on Android-powered tablets. Last year, Gboard brought the functionality to foldable devices like the Galaxy Fold series and Microsoft Surface Duo.
To give you a quick recap, the split keyboard feature divides Gboard into two halves with an equal number of keys on both the left and right sides. The option automatically enables the ‘Split layout to include duplicated keys’, which duplicates some keys on both sides of the keyboard. If you turn it off, the number of keys on the left side will be higher compared to that on the right. It also includes a toolbar tile that lets users quickly switch between the standard and split keyboard interface.
According to a recent report by 9to5Google, the Gboard split keyboard interface was first spotted by Galaxy Tab S8 running Gboard beta v12.9.21. While Google seems to be testing the new split keyboard on Android tablets, the revamped toolbar, which was spotted earlier this year in February is yet to roll out to users.
With the new split keyboard functionality for Gboard on Android tablets, users will be able to easily type on their tablets in both portrait and landscape modes. During the recently concluded Google I/O 2023 event, the company also announced that it has optimized more than 50 apps for foldable and tablets.
