Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus have finally been revealed at a special event in San Francisco. As rumours and leaks indicated, there is not much of difference between iPhone 7, iPhone 6s and iPhone 6 in terms of design. Apple iPhone 7 will be available in India starting from October 7 at a starting price of Rs 60,000, which is infact slightly cheaper than the price of iPhone 6s at launch.
Performance: Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 6s are similar only in terms of design, they are extremely different smartphones when it comes to specifications. Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus gets a new A10 Fusion chipset which company claims is 40x faster than the A9 chipset found on the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. With the new A10 Fusion, there is also 50 per cent jump in graphics performance. This is a quad-core chip with two dedicated cores for high performance, and two efficiency cores dedicated to lower power consumption.
Storage: Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus also come with twice the storage as opposed to 16GB base storage found on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Apple is finally addressing the demand for higher storage from consumers and the new iPhone 7 series comes in 32, 128GB, 256GB models. As always, there is no expandable storage option. The iPhone 6s series is also getting revamped and now has only 32GB and 128GB options.
Display: Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come with same 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays found on iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus respectively but the display here is 25 per cent brighter. Apple also says the new displays on iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are capable of wide-colour gamut which basically means colour should pop out of the display naturally. The technology used here is similar to the True Tone Display found on the iPad Pro series.
Here is how iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus stack up against its sibling iPhone 6s and 6s Plus
Interface: Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus come with updated home button which gets new Taptic Feedback engine like the Apple Watch and Force oTuch trackpad on the new MacBook and MacBook Pro. The Home button is now non-mechanical and offers unique feedback for actions, messages, notifications, ringtones and other apps. While Apple iPhone 6s and 6s Plus lack this option, they are definitely not a deal breaker.
Audio: Apple is also ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack with the introduction of Lightning connected EarPods. The end of 3.5mm audio jack was inevitable and Apple says Lightning-based EarPods promise better digital audio experience. Apple is justifying the move by talking about 900 million lightning connector devices and better power control offered by the port. It is yet unclear how good does the new EarPods sound but if you use a 3.5mm headphone jack-based earphones then your life is going to be at the edge of a dongle.
Camera: One of the reasons for getting new iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus will have to be its camera. With iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, Apple is making OIS standard among iPhones, which will make iPhone 7 the most pocketable video camera out there. The camera itself is an upgrade from one on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.
Apple iPhone 7 gets an updated 12MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture and six element lens. With the new camera, Apple iPhone 7 should perform remarkably better under low-light compared to iPhone 6s and 6s Plus. Apple iPhone 7 Plus, on the other hand, now has a dual rear camera with one wide-angle lens and one telephoto lens. The new dual camera setup on iPhone 7 Plus makes 2x optical zoom a reality on smartphones. There is also an updated 7MP iSight camera at the front which should help take better selfies in low-light.
Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus is an excellent smartphone in terms of specifications, but it is not a compelling upgrade anymore. With the introduction of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, there is scope for price-drop on iPhone 6s and 6s Plus which should make both the devices an even better choice.
