Everything we know so far about Apple’s foldable iPhone

Apple’s first foldable may mirror the iPad mini experience with a 4:3 aspect ratio and liquid metal hinge technology.

The upcoming Apple foldable iPhone is undoubtedly the most anticipated smartphone of 2026. In a note to investors, analyst Jeff Pu has shared some early details about the device, offering a peek into the potential specs of the iPhone Fold.

Specs of the iPhone Fold

Pu’s details are largely consistent with earlier rumours. To begin with, Apple may use Touch ID instead of Face ID for the foldable device. Considering how Face ID is much more secure, this is a little disappointing. We are not sure if this was a technical decision or a choice driven by financial considerations, but it is worth keeping in mind.

The iPhone Fold is said to have a body composed of aluminium and titanium, along with a titanium and liquid metal hinge designed to stay sturdy for frequent folding. Additionally, Pu says there may be two front-facing 18MP cameras—one on the inner display and another on the exterior. The phone, he says, will include a dual-camera arrangement with two 48MP sensors on the back.

According to Pu, the iPhone Fold’s display is likely to measure 5.3 inches on the outside and 7.8 inches on the inside. This is consistent with what we have been hearing. Pu does not address the aspect ratio, though, but previous rumours suggest Apple may opt for a 4:3 ratio instead of the more conventional square design. This would give the device a tablet-like appearance, similar to the iPad mini.

This could prove to be a wise move on Apple’s part since the iPhone Fold would be able to make use of the iPad apps already developed. However, this could also mean a smaller cover display. We believe that user preference plays a vital role here, as some users are comfortable with the square-ish screens on the latest foldables.

Unlikely to come cheap

Pu makes no mention of pricing in his investor memo. Unfortunately, rumours about the iPhone Fold’s pricing continue to circulate. Some suggest it may cost more than $2,000 (around Rs 1,81,419), with estimates reaching as high as $2,399 (almost Rs 2,17,612. Others, however, suggest that the price may be less than $2,000. Either way, it’s clear that Apple’s first foldable will not come cheap.
