In a new study, 82% of working professionals worry their roles could become redundant amid emerging tech advances. Dubbed ‘Future of the Skills Landscape 2024,’ the report highlights growing unease among India's workforce about potential job loss from advancing technology, underscoring the need for continuous reskilling. The report, which is by edtech startup Hero Vired, polled 2 lakh students, professionals and academics on technology's impact on careers. However, despite concerns about job loss, 78% view upskilling as key to stay relevant in a transforming job market. With technologies rapidly reshaping roles, workers recognise reskilling as critical to sustain employability. AI skills seen as vital for advancement The report also spotlights artificial intelligence's massive influence in shaping career growth. 39% of respondents say AI capabilities significantly impact promotion opportunities within current jobs. However, 43% express dissatisfaction with employers' limited AI training offerings. This gap highlights the perceived importance of AI skills versus actual skill-building support from companies. ChatGPT's launch has thrust AI into mainstream discussion on technology's role in workplaces. 90% of the respondents predict AI will be the most sought-after capability in five years. Strikingly, 80% believe AI skills will also be the highest paying by 2028. Preferences clear on upskilling particulars The report sheds light on professionals' upskilling frequency and channel choices. 43.5% of 18-55 year olds see needing to upskill every six months. With edtech expanding skill-building access, 81% opting to upskill last year chose online courses. 83% also say acquiring AI skills specifically would improve job prospects. Beyond tech, soft skills also valued While AI promises salary hikes, soft skills remain vital. Workers upskilled on hard skills stress focusing equally on non-technical capabilities like communication that set humans apart as automation accelerates. As such, the top three non-technology sector jobs expected to be in high demand were found to be digital marketing, green jobs, and mental health coaching. The report suggests that as industries prioritise environmental responsibility, the demand for professionals with expertise in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), corporate governance, and eco-friendly technologies is growing. Commenting on the findings, Akshay Munjal, founder and CEO of Hero Vired said, “The report cites concerns tied to rapid technological advancements while underscoring the crucial role of upskilling in addressing these challenges. Upskilling will prepare future leaders to better navigate through the challenges and assist them when using technology to their advantage.”
