OpenAI is reportedly planning to launch Orion, its much anticipated AI model sometime in December. But unlike previous releases like GPT-4o, it won’t be available to ChatGPT customers but limited to companies OpenAI closely works with.

According to a recent report by The Verge, who has learned about OpenAI’s plan from a source, Microsoft engineers are already planning to host Orion on the tech giant’s Azure platform by the end of next month. The publication also suggests that inside OpenAI, Orion may be termed as the GPT-4 successor, but it is still unclear if the company will call it GPT-5.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), an OpenAI executive hinted that the upcoming AI model may have “100x more computation volume than GPT-4”. He went on to say that the model uses similar resources and is trained on a compact Strawberry version. Rumour has it that Orion will be a significant step forward compared to previous AI models from the company, offering advanced problem-solving and reasoning capabilities compared to current generation models.

Last month, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared a cryptic tweet that said “excited for the winter constellations to rise soon; they are so great”. If you use ChatGPT to decode the post, the AI chatbot says that the answer is Orion. As it turns out, the launch of the upcoming AI model comes at a time after OpenAI secured a $6.6 billion funding round, which requires it to restructure itself as a for-profit company.

After disbanding its Superalignment team a few months ago, OpenAI has now reportedly dissolved its ‘AGI Readiness’ team. For those wondering, this team was tasked with advising the company on its capacity to handle AI models that could potentially equal or surpass human intellect.
