AI powerhouse OpenAI has rolled out custom instructions, a feature intended to give the user greater control over ChatGPT. With the new feature, users can set their preferences, and the AI chatbot will consider them for all future conversations.

“We’re introducing custom instructions so that you can tailor ChatGPT to better meet your needs. This feature will be available in beta starting with the Plus plan today, expanding to all users in the coming weeks. Custom instructions allow you to add preferences or requirements that you’d like ChatGPT to consider when generating its responses,” the company said in its official website.

According to the company, the new feature allows users to give ChatGPT any custom requests or context that they would want to apply to all their conversations. The feature is currently available to ChatGPT Plus users and OpenAI has plans to introduce it for all users.

Based on some early testers, the use cases of the new feature include expertise calibration that allows users to share their level of expertise in a specific field to avoid unnecessary explanations. Other use cases include language learning, novel writing, response format, and writing style personalisation.

This is the third big development from the Sam Altman-led company this month. Last week, OpenAI made its own in-house plugin Code Interpreter available to all ChatGPT Plus users. The plugin is known as a tool that could potentially threaten the jobs of data scientists. Meanwhile, in the first week of the month, the company made its GPT-4 API accessible for all users enrolled in the API program. The company also released GPT-3.5 and DALL-E and Whisper as part of its update.
