AI-generated summaries on Google Search will soon be visible to users in India as the tech giant announced on Thursday, August 15, that it is expanding AI Overviews to markets outside the US in the next few weeks.
Besides India, the generative AI feature is being rolled out in the United Kingdom, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil. It means that users in these countries who want to quickly search for something will be shown a simplified, AI-generated answer in response to their query with additional links to learn more about the relevant topic.
Google has said that AI Overviews in countries like India will have local-language support. It is also rolling out a feature built specifically for Indian users that allows them to switch between Google Search results in English or Hindi using a toggle button.
Additionally, Google Search in India is now equipped with text-to-speech meaning that users will be able to listen to the information they google.
AI Overviews got off to a bumpy start when it was first rolled out in the US in May 2024. The feature had to be put on hold after users posted screenshots of factually inaccurate and misleading AI-generated answers. For example, it erroneously claimed that former US President Barack Obama was a Muslim and even suggested that users put glue on their pizza in another instance.
“We extensively test how people respond to updates to Search. Since launching in the U.S., we’ve found people who use AI Overviews use Search more and are more satisfied with their results,” Google said in its blog post published on Thursday.
The company also said that AI Overviews on desktop will show users a panel of links to relevant websites on the right-hand side. It is also working on embedding links to relevant web pages directly within the text generated on AI Overviews.
“And when people click from search result pages with AI Overviews, these clicks are higher quality for websites – meaning users are more likely to spend more time on the sites they visit,” Google said.
