As the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League entered the playoffs on Tuesday with table-toppers and defending champions Gujarat Titans taking on Chennai Super Kings in the qualifier, the graphics on the broadcast showed something peculiar: instead of the tried-and-tested dots that symbolise dot balls in an over on the screen there were tree emojis.

Simon Doull and Harsha Bhogle, who were commentating for the qualifier, revealed on different occasions that the trees were to symbolise the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s new environmental initiative: the board planned to plant 500 trees for each dot ball bowled during the Playoffs.

Chennai Super Kings made it to their 10th IPL final after defeating table-topping Gujarat Titans by 15 runs at the Chepauk Stadium in the first qualifier on Tuesday.

Batting first, Ruturaj Gaikwad (60) and Devon Conway (40) set up CSK for a fighting total of 172.

When the home team came out to bowl, it was Chennai skipper MS Dhoni’s bowling choices and astute field settings that skittled out Gujarat for 157 runs. After the Mumbai Indians, Chennai are the team with the most IPL titles.
