Rohit Sharma played lone ranger in the chase of 207, scoring his only second century in the Indian Premier League. The former MI skipper’s efforts however were eclipsed by the Chennai Super Kings, who won the game by 20 runs.
Opening for the home side, in pursuit of an above par total, Rohit laced 11 fours and five sixes in his 63-ball-105. During the course of his innings, Rohit also became the first-ever Indian batter to hit 500 sixes in T20s.
Rohit’s ton marked the third of the ongoing IPL season. Virat Kohli and Jos Buttler had nabbed triple digit scores in the same game.
Earlier, CSK were put in to bat by Mumbai Indians. Ruturaj Gaikwad (69 off 40) and Shivam Dube (66 off 38) mustered some much needed boundaries after the fall of the opening combination of Ajinkya Rahane and Rachin Ravindra.
MS Dhoni then provided finishing touches, nailing a hattrick of sixes off Hardik Pandya’s last over to propel CSK over 200.
“MI versus CSK always known for a quality game. Rohit innings, Rutu and Shivam batted well too,” Shardul Thakur said afterwards.
“We felt the game is sliding a little when Rohit was going well. I felt let’s be brave here and make him hit to the bigger side. If he gets a boundary full marks to him and if he misses we could turn the game,” he added.
With the win, CSK remain third in the points table with four wins from six games. MI on the other hand, have two wins from as many games.
