MS Dhoni is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricket captains of all time. Known for his sharp cricketing brain and astute decision-making abilities on the field, Dhoni has an innate understanding of the game and can anticipate the course of play.

This was once again on display during the match between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) when the 41-year-old outsmarted his counterpart Rohit Sharma.

It all happened in the third over of MI’s innings when Dhoni decided to change the field as Rohit arrived to bat at number three.

The CSK captain opted to place fielders at backward point, short third and a slip while Dhoni himself stepped up to the stumps as Deepak Chahar ran into bowl.

The ploy worked to perfection as Sharma to tried to lap a slower delivery from the pacer but ended up making a mess of it and hit it to Ravindra Jadeja, who was stationed at backward point. “Great move from MS Dhoni to stand up early on the innings to Rohit Sharma & it worked for him,” said commentator Sanjay Manjrekar on air.

Dhoni won the toss and opted to bowl first against Mumbai Indians on Saturday.

CSK entered the field unchanged, while MI made two changes, bringing in left-arm spinner Raghav Goyal and Tristan Stubbs in place of Kumar Kartikeya and an unwell Tilak Varma, respectively. Raghav is making his debut.

Mumbai Indians managed a below-par 139 for 8. Skipper Rohit Sharma (0) failed to score for the second game in a row as Nehal Wadhera’s 64 off 51 balls was the only saving grace, while Suryakumar Yadav’s 26 off 22 balls was the second-best score.

For CSK, pacers Deepak Chahar (2/18 in 3 overs), Tushar Deshpande (2/26 in 4 overs) and Matheesha Pathirana (3/15 in 4 overs) were all among wickets.
