Ricky Ponting on the left and Virender Sehwag on the right. (FILE) Former Delhi Capitals skipper Virender Sehwag said the current coach of the franchise Ricky Ponting has to take the blame for the side’s disastrous start in the Indian Premier League 2023 season.
Speaking on Cricbuzz after the Capitals’ 23-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bangalore Sehwag said, “Ponting has done a brilliant job, took them to the finals, and they now reach the playoffs almost every year now. He took all those credits, now he has to take this credit as well.”
“There are zero roles of a coach in an IPL team. The big responsibility is man-management and giving the players that confidence, but in the end, a coach looks good only when the team performs well which Delhi haven’t done it at all. I feel Delhi has reached that point where they are confused about what should they do to change their fortune,” he added.
The former Indian cricketer also said, “Even we said so many times that this is not the Indian team where they take credit for the wins and for the losses someone else is blamed.”
On Saturday RCB posted 174 for 6 in the game at the Chinnaswamy with Virat Kohli top-scoring with a 34-ball 50, while Mahipal Lomror and Glenn Maxwell chipped in with 26 and 24 respectively. For DC, Mitchell Marsh and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets apiece.
In reply, DC lost three quick wickets to be reduced to 2 for 3 at one stage and the team never recovered from the setback, eventually finishing at 151 for nine in their 20 overs. The Capitals have now lost their first five games in the season after their defeat
