While a lot of experts and former cricketers have tipped Australia to have the edge against India in the World Test Championship final against India, former India coach Ravi Shastri believes that both teams will have to be cautious in the match that starts from June 7 at the Oval.

“Everyone’s saying Australia are clear favourites because we are playing in England. But it’s a one-off Test, just one bad day can ruin your chances. Australia also need to be very careful,” Shastri said.

Speaking of India’s failure to win an ICC trophy in the last decade, he said, “You have to compete. Sometimes, you need a little bit of luck going your way as well. I won’t say we didn’t play good cricket. We have played very good cricket. The rub of green hasn’t quite gone their way. I always say, this team is good enough to win an ICC trophy.”

Recalling his time with the national side, Shastri said, “When I was there, I used to say the same thing… especially in last three-four years, I thought the team was good enough to win an ICC trophy. Those players are still there.”

India under the coaching of Shastri and the captaincy of Virat Kohli lost the WTC final to New Zealand in 2021 by eight wickets at the Rose Bowl in Southampton.
