I don’t think pitch changed much. It was good batting wicket. Rohit bhai is batting exceptionally well, he is all blaze going well.

Batting with Rohit: to see them how they go about their business is one thing I learn from them. Especially in big games, their mindset is. I try to learn from them.

Virat Kohli: Sorry for stealing it (PoTM award) from Jaddu, I wanted to make a big contribution. I have had a few fifties in World Cups, haven't really converted them. I just wanted to finish the game off this time around and hang on till the end which is what I have done over the years for the team. I was telling Shubman, even if you dream about a situation like that, you'll just go back to sleep, you won't think it's real. It was a dream start for me, first four balls, two free-hits, a six and a four. Just calms you down gets you into the innings. The pitch was pretty good and it allowed me to play my game - just time the ball, hit the gaps, run hard and get the boundaries whenever needed. There's a great atmosphere in the change room, we are loving each others' company, the spirit is there for everyone to see on the field. That's why it's translating like that on the field. We understand it's a long tournament, you need to create some momentum in the change room for the guys to come out and play like this. It's a special feeling playing at home, playing in front of all these people, we just want to make the most of it.

Virat Kohli brought up his first century of the 2023 World Cup, his 78th overall as he stayed true to his chase master moniker and helped India defeat Bangladesh.

This was Kohli’s 48th ODI century and his 3rd in the 50-over showpiece’s history. He brought up his ton in 97 balls in an innings peppered with 6 fours and 4 sixes.

It was the stuff of legends as Kohli finished off the match and his century with a huge six, putting Bangladesh out of their misery as Indian romped to their 4th straight win in as many matches. (READ MORE)

Vande Mataram starts blazing around the venue. Nasum starts off with a slider down the leg side but Richard Kettleborough doesn't give it and the crowd and the Indian dressing room goes wild. They all want the same thing here and they get it as Virat Kohli goes all the way over the mid wicket boundary for a six and roars out loud getting to his century and India have their win. Fourth in a row. Paisa vasool, as they'll call it in Pune. 

Rohit Sharma hangs back in his seat and gives a wry smile watching it all unfold in front of him. KL Rahul desperate to let Virat Kohli has his moment comes back for a quick double. Dot ball, and off the next one, the two repeat the drill. Shubman Gill flashes on the big screen, all smiles. Kohli swipes down mid wicket but there's a fielder stationed. No run. Keeps the strike with a single off the last ball

Flighted delivery outside the off, and he swipes it through mid wicket for four. The ball is nudged through covers but he doesn't take a single. Picks the next one for another maximum, a slog sweep over mid wicket. KL Rahul refuses to get on the strike and Kohli retains it for the next over. The crowd are desperate to see that first Virat Kohli hundred while chasing in ODI World Cup history. It's taken some time but it may happen at last.

Kohli takes the aerial route and the blue pops out at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Picks the slower, length ball from outside the off stump and it sails over long on for six. He gets into the 80s. 

Mehidy Hasan Miraz wraps up his spell - 10-0-47-2. Finishes as the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers but the team has been nowhere near to their first outing when Miraz had also closed with most wickets for his side. Lots of questions and little time to answer them all with just the one win to show for from the first four games. 

It's not been the best of days for Shariful Islam and it gets worse as KL Rahul switches to aggressive mode. Back-to-back short ones and Rahul dispatches them either side of the square on the leg side for a six and a four. Barely any pace on the ball and Rahul has enough time to visualise his shots. 

The game seems like done and dusted for Bangladesh. They'd started the tournament with a big win against Afghanistan but have since lost track. It was a flat deck on Pune they had gotten but the Indian bowlers juiced the maximum out of their resources whilst the Bangladeshi bowlers haven't had answers to the Indian batters who've come out all guns blazing. 

Shoriful Islam back into the attack. Comes round the wicket, goes with a slower length ball but KL Rahul has read that like a book. Pulls it in front of square for four more runs. Five runs come off the over. 

200 up for India!

Mehidy Hasan Miraz into his eighth over continues to remain economical. Meanwhile another day, another name flash in world records for Virat Kohli, who overtakes Jacques Kallis in the tally for most fifty plu scores in international cricket with his 212th. In front of him are Kumar Sangakkara (216), Ricky Ponting (217) and of course, Sachin Tendulkar (264).

Mahudullah into the attack and straightaway there's a flashback to 2011 from the broadcasters. It was off his bowling that a young Virat Kohli kickstarted his ODI World Cup career. A game that saw him get his first hundred in the competition. Six runs come off the off-break bowler's first over. 

A boundary in the last over and this duo are more than happy to switch to singles in the next. Four each from the next two. Bangladesh would know how these two had turned the tide in Chennai. But they will also know a couple of quick wickets is their best chance now. And the only way to put the Indians under the pump. 

Shreyas Iyer is gone!

Mehidy Hasan Miraz gets another one. Advances down the track, looking to go over the mid wicket boundary, miscues it to Mahmudullah at the boundary. India lose a third wicket. 

India have their star duo from the first game in the middle as KL Rahul joins Virat Kohli. The former gets off the mark by making room on the leg side and picking out one of those late cut shots behind square from that night in Chennai.

It's not a slash, not even a punch, merely a caress through extra cover and it races to the fence for four. He's timing it supremely tonight and one can imagine the biggie as well. 

Vinayakk Mohanarangan: Any yorker that achieves its primary objective of beating a batter and hitting the stumps is a good one. But within that spectrum, what Jasprit Bumrah did in Pune was close to perfection. To a well-set Mahmudullah, Bumrah nailed what could only be described as cricket's version of the X-ring arrow in archery. In the last over of the Bangladesh innings, Bumrah hit the very base of the middle stump for a sight that you could watch on loop. Of course, followed by his casual shrug-and-smile celebration.

Sandip G: Fifth ball of the 27th over, Virat Kohli unleashed a pull that whipped up memories of his double hundred against South Africa in the same ground. The ball was a rank long-hop, and at Hasan Mahmiud’s pace a pure gift, Kohli did not even bother shifting to his back-foot, stood where he was after the front-foot press and hammered the ball in front of the square. In the Test, South Africa’s pacers too had tried to rattle him with short balls, after Kohli had repelled all their other measures. Anrich Nortje hustled him a few times, but later on Kohli would pull anything that was marginally short.

Hasan Mahmud with a short one for Virat Kohli, who picks it with a pull shot from outside the off stump to place in front of square on the on side for four runs. Pushes one down mid on for a single and completes his third fifty of this tournament. 

Spin to go with pace from the other end. Mehidy Hasan Miraz slowing things down for the men in blue - literally and figuratively - in the ball speed and run rate column. Three more singles off his latest over and this has been a decent spell so far. 5-0-25-1.

Devendra Pandey, from Pune: 33,610 fans turned up for the India vs Bangladesh World Cup league game at Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) stadium in Pune which has the capacity of 37,407. The seats in the stadium looked empty initially, however, the crowd turned up for the game as the game progressed.

Shreyas Iyer with another quick single negotiated but he catches a direct hit on his leg. The physio is in and with Iyer looking in some discomfort the Indian fans are keeping their fingers crossed. They've already had one injury to worry about today. Not another one as Iyer continues and wraps the over with a boundary. 

150 up for India!

The run rate has slowed down in the last few overs, boundaries haven't come as often as they did in that Rohit Sharma-Shubman Gill stand. But India are in the advantage here and the Bangladesh bowlers need wickets to open up this game. 

Sandip G: Mahmadullah has the feet of a cat, stealthy and sneaky. He backpedaled to consume Shubman Gill’s partially mis-timed shot at midwicket, dangerously close to the boundary. Upon completion, he shifted to his left side gracefully and effortlessly so that the impetus would not take him over the ropes. He maintained his balance, ensuring that he did not trespass into the space beyond the boundary. The beauty of the catch was that he did not make it look like it was spectacular. As the ball kept dipping, it seemed that his follow through might take him past the boundary. There was none in sight for a relay catch either. But Mahmadullah had utter control over his limbs, and not for once he looked nervous. Cool and composed, Mahmadullah with the feet of a cat, stealthy and sneaky.

Mehidy continues from the other end. This is good passage of play for Bangladesh after runs leaked in the first 15 overs or so. Just three off this one. 

Most miserly of overs of the eve so far from Bangladesh as Shoriful Islam gives away just the one run. To be fair, Virat Kohli stole that one with his running between the wickets. The fielder at mid off had got the ball at good height to have a go on the stumps almost instantly but he couldn't hit the target. Even if he had, the dive from Kohli had him safe.

Venkata Krishna B: As if getting a low full-toss to get off the mark wasn't enough for Virat Kohli, he got two successive free hits as Hasun Mahmud over-stepped twice. For someone who is used to start slow, these freebies helped Kohli to keep pace with the momentum provided by Rohit Sharma. And there was something uncharacteristic in the way Kohli played both the free hits. For the first one, he cleared his left leg and went deep in the crease to hit the ball left of mid-on. And then off the next, he went further deep in the crease, as he expected Mahmud to bowl full. And as the seamer obliged, he deposited over long-on.

Vinayakk Mohanarangan: Rohit's love for the pull shots is no secret and he is perhaps one of the best exponents in the modern game. But every now and then, he does tend to get out playing it as well. Today, we saw it in quick succession. A full-blooded pull went for a six but when he tried to roll his wrists a little bit, it went to the fielder. But he has always backed himself with that shot. He had said after one such frustrating dismissal in a 2021 Test match in England: "I mean yes you feel disappointed, but you know there is very thin line between getting out like that and that same delivery or same ball, if the catch was slightly away or five yards left and right of the fielder, it could have been either way as well. You got to think positive and that's what my mindset was."

He had a wry smile as he walked away but make no mistake, the next time he sees the ball there to be pulled, he will go for it once again.

Shubman Gill looks to clear the mid wicket boundary but is unable to get a good connection and is claimed by Mahmudullah near the ropes. End of a good knock that. 

Shreyas Iyer joins Virat Kohli, who clamps onto a length ball offering with four more runs through extra cover for four. Iyer edges the last ball of the over and it runs behind for four. 

A soft nudge through extra cover for a single and Shubman Gill has his first-ever half century at a World Cup. He was pipped as India's big hope with the bat going into the tournament. More runs in the 50-overs format this year than anyone else was the basis of that claim. Having been sidelined owing to illness, he's now finally announced his arrival at the competition. 

A change in bowling for Bangladesh as Mehidy Hasan Miraz comes on. The all-rounder was player of the match for his team in their first game and win of the tournament. Can he inspire a comeback here. Starts off by conceding just the three runs. 

India in the driving seat in Pune at the first drinks break. The first wicket has barely felt like a break for the Bangladesh bowlers with Virat Kohli starting off on a quick note. Bangladesh in desperate search of wickets here. 

Fizz continues from the other end and this is good comeback after being dispatched from early boundaries. Just four runs from the over. 

This is poor from Bangladesh. Virat Kohli creames one through mid wicket and Shoriful Islam has a chase from mid on but in his diving attempt to keep the ball in, it goes over. 

Mustafizur Rahman continues from the other end. This time though, it's an economical over. India in complete hold of the game here and even Bangladesh's numero uno with the ball has been unable to leave a mark. 

Bangladesh's short ball ploy finally works!

The MCA Stadium had barely gotten over that last pull shot of the Indian captain from a short ball. It had sailed all the way over the deep square leg boundary for six. Hasan stuck to the length and this time, it was a tad bit more quicker and the connection was closer to in front of square rather than behind and the Towhid Hridoy claims the catch.

But hang on, there's no respite for the bowlers as Virat Kohli takes off straightaway. Gets off the mark with a couple and has a free hit off the next ball. Whacks it past mid on for four. Gets offered another full one and this time, he strikes it even sweeter. All the way over long on for six.

Mustafizur back into the attack after being taken off following his first over, and it's not a pleasant return. 

He offers a length ball to Gill, who cuts it late and just wide of the backward point fielder to get a first boundary. Next up? A fuller length delivery that's expertly manouvred through the mid wicket for a flick-shot-four. Finally, a fuller one on the off stump that's creamed through extra cover for a third boundary of the over.

Bangladesh bowlers may need some counselling here. Not just given the way these two are flying but also why would you go short for Rohit Sharma at this point? Why even try? Hasan Mahmud offers another and the Indian skipper collects another boundary.

Gill uppes the ante. Dances down the track twice to dispatch Nasum for a couple of maximums. The first sails over long on while the second is a bit more straighter. The top-scorer in ODIs this year, ladies and gentlemen. 

Fifty up for India. Hasan Mahmud replaces Shoriful Islam. Gill nicely tucks one down deep backward square leg to bring up the first milestone for India's batting on the night. 

Rohit Sharma continues his onslaught. Full and outside off from Nasum Ahmed and the Indian skipper kneels down and sweeps it neatly through backward square leg for four more runs. 

Where do they pitch the ball to him? Full? He can sweep them like that. Against quicks, out come the flick shots and the delicious cover drive that kickstarted the innings. Length? There've been more than one slashes and cuts so far on the night alone. Shor....let's not even go there.

Shubman Gill steps out of his crease, shimmies down in attempt to carve the ball over mid off but only gets a thick outside edge that sails over the slip fielder for four. Six runs come off the over

Nasum Ahmed starts off his second over with a short ball and Rohit Sharma tracks back in his crease before cutting it through point for four. The boundaries just keep on coming. 

Shoriful Islam continues from the other end and pitches one full, Rohit Sharma lifts it over the mid off and it bounces twice on it's way across the ropes. This is Indian batting at its ominous best for Bangladesh.

Spin brought early into play as Nasum Ahmed replaces Mustafizur Rahman. Generates an lbw appeal off Shubman Gill but it's going down the leg side. Gill survives a closer call as he retrieves deep in his crease to play a cut shot with an angled bat but instead gets an inside edge that breezes past the stumps.

New over, same mistake from Islam. Strays outside off stump again - back of a length - and Rohit latches onto it with another slash for four. A bigger cardinal sin comes later. Short on the leg and we all know how the Indian captain plays those. First six of the innings. 

Shubman Gill joins the party. His first ball of the game, Mustafizur Rahman dashes in from over the wicket, sprays one on his pads and the Indian opener flicks it flamboyantly through mid wicket for four. 2023 wants more of Gill and he looks in the touch to deliver tonight. 

Rohit Sharma gets off the mark with a glittering cover drive for four. Picture perfect that from the Indian captain. As calm as that posture and the connection with the ball is, the next one is an act of violence and rightly so. Width outside the off stump and he slashes it hard to beat the fielder at backward point for another boundary.

Right then, 257 is what Bangladesh have to defend with an intimidating sea of blue around them at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Out come Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. The Indian skipper is in imperial form, can he continue going like his 2019 self, as he had wished for before the tournament began. Gill, who'd made a late entry into the squad ahead of the India-Pakistan game, has another go at announcing his arrival at the tournament. 

Shoriful Islam has the new ball for Bangladesh. Coming over the wicket to the Indian captain. Here we go!

When a young KL Rahul walked into a U-13 camp in Mangalore organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association, he introduced himself to the coach Jayaraj: “Sir, I am KL Rahul, and I’m a wicketkeeper batsman.” The coach has recalled in the past how Rahul was a pretty good wicket keeper then, but he identified that the boy’s batting talent was waiting to be tapped and encouraged. Though he continued to keep wickets in the age-group level, Rahul the batsman began to move out of the wicketkeeper’s shadow.

This World Cup, after being trolled for his wicket-keeping during the ODI series against Australia in October, Rahul’s glove work is being celebrated again. In the 25th over, when the extra bounce from Mohammad Siraj’s scrambled-seam ball surprised Melody Hasan Miraz who stabbed it down leg side, Rahul not only moved swiftly to his left but also threw in a stunning dive to pouch it with his left hand. I think wicket looks very good, there was no turn on the wicket, if we play simple cricket, we can chase it. The celebration was dedicated to our fielding coach. After every game, we get best fielder award and so I wanted to show the fielding coach, see I am here. I would say flat wicket, ball was coming nicely onto the bat, hopefully our batters can bat well in the middle and chase it down. You have to bowl into the stumps, there is nothing on the wicket for the spinners, so you have to bowl it tight.

STAT ALERT: All eyes at the start of the run chase will be on Rohit Sharma and there is good reason for it. He has scored 217 runs in three innings (well, effectively two) while going at a staggering 141.8 strike rate. The Indian skipper has been aggressive in the powerplay overs where he has taken an ultra-attacking approach (Runs: 121, SR: 153.2, BPB: 4). Sharma has exceptional head-to-head numbers against Bangladesh in ODIs too (Inns: 16, Runs: 738, Avg: 56.8, 100s: 3)

It had been an inning after getting a good start from Tanzid and Litton kept losing its way. While it looked like they would get to 300 with ease in the first phase of the game the Indian spinners had their say in the middle overs. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav have been golddusts in the tournament because of their ability to pick wickets through middle overs. In the end, Jasprit Bumrah was magnificent yet again with his death bowling. Though Rohit lost Hardik to an injury early this is still a top bowling effort from the Indians. Shardul Thakur when needed to deliver did a decent job today. All in all, it is a below-par total from Bangladesh and the Indian side would be looking to chase it with ease and if dew comes in things will get even easier for the home side.
