Quiz contests in April: Bollywood, Crosswords, Sports & a Mumbai Showdown

A love for brain games is blossoming into creative quiz competitions cross India. Here are our top picks for April.

Picky quizzers are like picky eaters — annoying on a daily basis, but on occasion, a great motivator for us to think differently. On an editor’s end, it pushes us to improve our curation, ensuring you have a wide selection of quizzes to try each month. The Indian circuit is quite delightful right now, with a fun lineup of events for all ages. Let’s take a closer look:

Crossword Battle by The Indian Express (Delhi)

Tooting our own horn? Express Puzzles & Games is hosting an open crossword contest on April 20 at ConQurso, the annual quiz fest of Hansraj College. Word nerds of all ages can participate, for a shot at prizes, press and punny glory. For beginners who’d like practice, we recommend sampling our Mini Crossword’s free archives. Conqurso has an overall prize pool of Rs 40,000, with five other quizzes spread out from April 18 to 22.

Hindi Ent Quiz at IIIT Delhi

A written quiz for Bollywood buffs, this event promises “lots of Masti and Dhamaal, and hopefully some Tamasha too.” You can team up with a friend to crack the 100-question mega set on April 20. The event starts at 9am at IIIT Delhi, and will be hosted by quizmasters Mohd Fahad and Amit Sinha. The latter is the author of ‘Do Different: The Untold Dhoni’, which should come in handy for the next quiz on this guide.

Sports Quizzing League, Online

Season 2 of Sports Quizzing League begins from May 6. Fans of everything from cricket to croquet can participate in this MIMIR league, which features 10 gameweeks with one sports quiz per week. MIMIR is a British format that makes online quizzing fair and exciting, and for SQL, you will be matched with other players from around the world and compete for points on a leaderboard.

Madras Minutiae ‘24 by IIT Madras

IIT Madras’ Quiz Club is hosting a two-day campus quiz festival on April 13 and 14. Day 1’s quizzes (Fine Arts, HELM) are by reputed national QM Major Chandrakant Nair, while Day 2 features Sci Tech and Open Quiz contests by local veterans. Grab the full schedule:

Fundaesliga Summer Showdown, Mumbai

Fundaesliga Quiz League–now in its third year—is bringing an offline brain games contest to Mumbai on May 11 and 12. Featuring six events, the competition will have a Rs 1 lakh-plus prize pool and unfold at the Nehru Centre in Worli. Team, solo and elimination-style formats should make this one a doozy!

QFI Invitation Quiz, National

The Quiz Foundation of India (QFI Chennai) will be hosting their annual Invitation Quiz on June 9 (prelims). Helmed by veterans Abid Abdulla, Siddhanth Rao, TK Balaji and Dr. Navin Jayakumar, this is a national GK quiz that will simultaneously unfold in multiple cities across India — if yours doesn’t have a venue yet, you can host or become a proctor by writing in to quizfoundation@gmail.com. Early registration is advisable, hence the inclusion on an April guide.

Ambedkar Memorial Quiz, Pune

Dr BR Ambedkar’s birth anniversary (Ambedkar Jayanti) is on April 14. To mark the occasion, RJ14Sports is hosting an online quiz competition in Pune for students aged 4 to 16+. There are four categories to choose from, with cash prizes, trophies and certificates in store for the top three winners of each category.
