Pune civic polls only after September 4 as Maharashtra govt orders timeline for ward delimitation
With the state government declaring a timeline for the ward delimitation process for civic polls, it is clear that the elections of Pune Municipal Corporation will be held only after September 4.
In a move to pave the way for the long-pending municipal corporation elections, the Maharashtra Urban Development Department Tuesday issued notifications detailing the procedure for finalising ward boundaries across the state. All municipal corporations, barring Mumbai, will adopt a four-member ward system for the upcoming civic polls. In an order, the Maharashtra government declared that the final draft of the delimitation should be published by September 4.
The PMC will have a four-member electoral ward for civic polls. Accordingly, it is expected that the PMC will have 165 corporators to be elected from 42 electoral wards, having a maximum of four corporators each.

“The draft delimitation should be prepared by July 7 and sent to the state Election Commission by July 10. The draft will be published by July 22, and public suggestions and opinions should be sought till July 31. The public hearing on the suggestion and objection should be conducted from August 1 to 11, and the amended draft is submitted to the state election commission by August 18,” said a PMC officer, citing the state government order.
The Election Commission is set to publish the final delimitation document between August 29 and September 4. According to an official, the electoral roll will be finalised thereafter, and public opinion will also be sought on it.
After finalising the electoral roll, the election notification, which will include the schedule of polls and the election date, will be issued to initiate the process of filing nominations, the official stated.
The state government’s decision to initiate the election process for civic polls follows the Supreme Court’s directive to hold the elections within the next four months, citing excessive delays. The five-year term of the elected body of the PMC ended in 2022, and since then, the civic body has been under administrator rule.
