Samajwadi Party on Thursday said it was supporting the UPA government despite its opposition to some of the policies of the Congress-led alliance,to avoid mid-term elections and keep "communal forces" out of power. "There are certain compulsions. From a common man to political parties, nobody wants mid-term elections as it will not be in the interest of the people," SP national general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said here. Yadav was replying to a query that after a nation-wide agitation on price rise issue, why the SP indirectly supported the UPA government by staging a walk out in Parliament during the cut motion. "Nobody wants mid-term elections within a year time,as it will have serious implications. When prices are already sky rocketing,mid-term polls will have a cascading effect," he said. The SP leader further said the party does not want communal forces to come into power. "In case the government falls, then before dissolving the Lok Sabha it is the responsibility of the President to invite the largest party. In such a situation, the SP will never favour that BJP gets a chance to form the government," he said. "We or in fact no other party wants the government to fall and mid term elections are held or the power passes in the hands of communal forces," he said. Yadav said that withdrawing support would be the last resort. "We are trying to bring this deaf government on the right path by taking to the streets. Final decision would be taken only when all the options are over. It will be the last resort," he said.
