Defending Mamata Banerjee to exiting TMC: Jawhar Sircar since R G Kar storm hit the party

The bureaucrat-turned-MP last month backed the TMC chief, saying the “educated middle class hate a CM of subalterns”. On Sunday, he criticised the Bengal CM's handling of the case while announcing his resignation.

Unlike some career politicians, Jawhar Sircar, a former bureaucrat who switched to politics a few years ago, never seemed at home in the political arena. Sircar, a former Prasar Bharati CEO known for his forthright views against the BJP-led Union government, was brought into the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2021 and nominated to the Rajya Sabha as the party looked to carve out a more national role.

Within a year, Sircar took aim at a “rotten section” within his party, raising eyebrows and rubbing some of his colleagues the wrong way. After the rape and murder of a doctor at Kolkata’s R G Kar Hospital on August 9, as his party faced flak from all around over how the government handled the case, Sircar called for justice for the doctor’s family and at one point even defended Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the steps taken by the state government.

Here are some of his posts on X since then on the R G Kar case and related issues such as women’s safety and burden on junior doctors:

On Sunday, Sircar highlighted his frustration over the lack of action against corruption in his resignation letter to Banerjee. “I just cannot accept some things, like corrupt officers (or doctors) getting prime and top postings … In all my years, I have not seen such anger and total no-confidence against the government, even when it says something correct or factual,” he said.

Sircar added, “I have suffered patiently for a month since the terrible incident at RG Kar Hospital, and was hoping for your direct intervention with the agitating junior doctors, in the old style of Mamata Banerjee. It has not happened and whatever punitive steps that government is taking now are too little and quite late.”
