The election affidavit filed by Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, who is contesting her maiden electoral battle from the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, on Wednesday shows she and her husband Robert Vadra have combined movable and immovable assets worth Rs 77.55 crore.
As per the details of the affidavit, Priyanka has movable assets worth Rs 4.25 crore, including Rs 52,000 cash in hand, Rs 3.67 lakh in three bank accounts, mutual fund investments of Rs 2.25 crore, and gold and silver worth Rs 1.45 crore.
Priyanka has also declared Rs 7.74 crore in immovable assets, including under four acres of inherited agricultural land in New Delhi that she shares with her brother Rahul, and a residential building worth Rs 5.64 crore in Himachal Pradesh’s Shimla district.
In total, Priyanka has declared Rs 11.99 crore in assets. Besides these assets, she also has liabilities of Rs 15.75 lakh.
Her husband Robert Vadra has movable assets worth Rs 37.92 crore, including Rs 2.18 lakh cash in hand, and immovable assets worth Rs 27.64 crore, for a total of Rs 65.56 crore. Among his immovable assets are four commercial properties in Gurgaon and Noida. His liabilities amount to Rs 10.03 lakh.
Notably, Priyanka has not declared any assets or liabilities for her dependents.
Her brother Rahul had declared total assets worth Rs 20.4 crore, including Rs 9.25 crore in movable assets and Rs 11.15 crore, for the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls.
While Priyanka’s sources of income include rental, interest from banks, and income from investments, Vadra’s sources include rental, business, and income from investments.
The Income Tax Department had initiated reassessment proceedings against Priyanka for the year 2012-13, and passed a reassessment order in 2019, raising a demand of Rs 15.75 lakh. That order has been appealed before the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) and 20%, or Rs 3.15 lakh, of the tax demand has been paid as mandated by the CAT. However, refunds of subsequent years are also adjusted to an extent of Rs 7.97 lakh, taking total dues to Rs 11.12 lakh. At present, the appeal is pending before the CAT.
Priyanka’s total reported income for the assessment year 2023-24 as shown in her I-T returns is Rs 46.39 lakh. In the last five years, her highest income was in 2019-20 at Rs 69.32 lakh, and the lowest income was Rs 19.89 lakh in 2020-21.
The IT Department has also initiated reassessment proceedings against Vadra from 2010-11 to 2020-21 for various amounts ranging from Rs 2.39 crore up to Rs 24.16 crore. The reassessment orders have been appealed and pending before the CAT. However, the I-T Department in 2018 had passed an order for assessment year 2015-16, raising a demand of Rs 1.8 crore. This order has also been appealed and is pending before the CAT.
Vadra has shown his total income, as per his I-T returns, for 2023-24 as Rs 15.09 lakh. He had a total income of Rs 55.58 lakh in 2019-20, which was the highest in the last five years. The lowest income shown was in 2021-22 at Rs 9.04 lakh.
Priyanka has also declared three pending FIRs from 2019, 2022 and 2023, which include sections 420, 469, 188, 269 and 270 of IPC, and sections 9 and 15 of Wildlife Protection Act.
