A 10-member delegation of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) was stopped from entering the violence-hit district of Nuh on Tuesday. The delegation was led by the party’s state unit chief Udai Bhan and Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda.

The delegation was stopped at Palwal T-point in Rojka Meo village where the police had put up barricades and had made a heavy deployment of personnel.

Nuh Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya said, “The Congress delegation was not allowed as Section 144 of the CrPC has been imposed in the district. The district administration is making all possible efforts to help those affected in the violence that erupted on July 31.”

He added, “Amid ongoing efforts if there is a political visit, it will lead to additional burden on the district administration. The situation is getting back to normalcy. We requested the delegation to replan their visit at a later occasion after the situation becomes fully normal in the district.”

Reacting strongly to the police action Hooda said, “We wanted to visit Nalhar temple in Nuh. We wanted to meet our brothers and sisters in Nuh’s anaj mandi (vegetable market). We wanted to meet all those who incurred loss of life or property in the violence. We wanted to meet those whose homes, shops, cars etc were demolished. We wanted to issue an appeal for peace and communal harmony.”

Hooda added, “It is due to the government’s failure that Haryana is facing such issues and law and order is repeatedly being disrupted. The government is solely responsible for this.”

The leader further claimed that a heavy deployment of police was done to stop the Congress. “Had the government done a similar kind of deployment on the day of the yatra (July 31), the clash between the communities could have been stopped.”

A few of the prominent Congress leaders who were a part of the delegation are the state unit’s working president Jitendra Bhardwaj, former minister Captain Ajay Singh Yadav, Mahendragarh MLA Rao Dan Singh and Rohtak MLA B B Batra.

Meanwhile, intelligence agencies have recommended verification of identities of nearly 2,000 migrants who are believed to be living in Nuh. This comes in the backdrop of the police receiving several inputs about the presence of certain outsiders who are believed to have participated in the violence in Nuh.

A senior police officer said, “Verifying their identities is very important so that the issue can be dealt with as per the law. There are several persons like Rohingyas etc who reach Nuh, after which they are exploited or forced to get into illegal activities. In case a need arises, these people may also be shifted out of Nuh to other places.”
