Eight family members of former prime ministers would be testing their electoral fortunes in the coming Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh.
Uttar Pradesh,which has the maximum number of parliamentary seats and has also given the maximum number of prime ministers to the country,would see the family members of former premiers fighting it out for an entry into the 15th Lok Sabha.
Family members of the Nehru-Gandhi family,which gave three prime ministers to the country,will be in the fray with both the daughters-in-laws,Sonia Gandhi and Maneka Gandhi fighting it out in Rae Bareli and Aonla and their respective sons,Rahul and Varun from Amethi and Pilibhit seats.
The younger daughter-in-law,Maneka Gandhi has followed the elder one in vacating her traditional seat,Pilibhit,for her son.
Sonia Gandhi had did the same when she left her Amethi seat for son Rahul.
Besides members of the Nehru-Gandhi family,the son and grandson of late prime minister Charan Singh would be trying their luck and cash on the Jat voters which have been long associated with Singh senior.
While son Ajit Singh of the Rashtriya Lok Dal would be contesting from his family seat of Baghpat,grandson Jayant Chaudhary,plunging into the electoral fray,would try his luck from Mathura.
Another new face would be that of Ajeya Singh,son of former Raja of Manda and late Prime Minister V P Singh,who will contest on a LJP ticket from his father’s traditional constituency,Fatehpur.
Neeraj Shekhar,son of former prime minister Chandra Shekhar would again contest from the seat nurtured by his father,Ballia.
Neeraj was given Samajwadi Party ticket in the by-election after the demise of his father and the party has again reposed its faith in him.
