Thiruvananthapuram: The BJP will field veteran leader O Rajagopal for the by-election in Aruvikkara Assembly segment, setting the stage for a tough triangular battle. Although the BJP district committee suggested a local leader as the candidate, the party core committee wanted Rajagopal to contest.

BJP state president V Muraleedharan Sunday said Rajagopal’s name had been submitted to the central leadership of the party. The unexpected entry of Rajagopal, 85, as the BJP candidate has changed the by-poll scenario in

Thiruvananthapuram constituency. In the last Lok Sabha elections, he finished second behind Shashi Tharoor of Congress. A minister in the Vajpayee government in 1999, he has never won an electoral battle.
