You scratch my back

* This refers to ‘Of the BCCI,for the BCCI’ (IE,June 3). Srinivasan should have resigned as BCCI president instead of temporarily stepping down. The extent of his influence over the BCCI was clear during the Board’s meeting in Chennai, where his resignation was not asked for. Now,Dalmiya is the interim head of the BCCI. He was accused of embezzling funds meant for the 1996 world cup. The BCCI withdrew the charges against Dalmiya in 2010,when Srinivasan was the treasurer of the Board. Given this context,Dalmiya should not have been made the interim head of the BCCI.

* WHEN Lalu Prasad Yadav was Bihar CM,he was alleged to have been involved in the fodder scam. This made him step down. He made his wife CM and ruled the state by proxy. Now,it seems as though Srinivasan will rule the BCCI by proxy through Dalmiya. This is a betrayal of cricket lovers and the BCCI as a whole .

* THIS refers to ‘Making the grade’ by M.M. Ansari (IE,June 4). The condition of HEIs in India can not be expected to improve overnight or,for that matter, even in the foreseeable future. The system of education in India has always been different from that in the West, and has never been conducive to research, which is one area where we really lag behind. Research abilities are a major criterion while analysing and evaluating HEIs. Improving ourselves will be a gradual process, and with the full commitment and cooperation of the HRD ministry,we should be able to achieve this in the future.

* THIS refers to ‘Parties under RTI act’ (IE,June 4). This decision will not be to the liking of political parties, though it is welcomed by citizens. Other than the six parties mentioned in the CIC’s order, all other political parties registered with the Election Commission should also be brought under the RTI’s ambit. There are reports that this order might not be legally tenable and might be struck down by the judiciary. Political parties should accept this verdict nonetheless. Transparency in the functioning of political outfits will go a long way in cleansing public life.

* ALTHOUGH the ruling by the CIC is historic, the critical question is why Parliament has not enacted a law on the regulation and functioning of political parties till date. The registration and recognition of political parties continues to be governed by the Election Symbols Order,1968. The recommendations of the Constitution Review Commission,2002,proposing that political parties maintain accounts and be audited by some independent body, and the same be open to public scrutiny, are also yet to be implemented.
