Wrong answer
Following the gangrape of a Dalit girl in Jind, khap panchayats in Haryana have come up with their own solution to the rising number of rape cases in the state. They recommend that boys and girls be married by the time they are 16. Rape is a serious crime and lowering the age at which people can be married is no solution. In fact, marrying when neither partner is mature could even add to the problem. Increasing awareness and other alternatives should be explored to curb this crime.

M. RAJIVLOCHANS piece Chief minister and crusader (IE,OCtober 8) shows the former Punjab chief minister, the late Pratap Singh Kairon,in a favourable light. However,Kairon was assassinated while driving on G.T. Road, between Delhi and Amritsar, for reasons not known till date. History teaches us to be impartial to its subjects. A one-sided story is no history.

ONE always had the impression that Pratap Singh Kairon was a very effective administrator who laid the foundations for a modern Punjab. He paved the way for the Green Revolution but,it is believed, was uncompromising on the issue of corruption. However, these days, the general impression is that if you are not corrupt you cannot ensure effective implementation.

The thick of it
THE allegations made by Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan that Robert Vadra has amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income have been refuted by the latter (Robert Vadra-Haryana-DLF nexus exists: Arvind Kejriwal,IE,October 9). Vadra hit back saying the allegations had been made for the sake of cheap publicity and in order to tar his business reputation. However,it is surprising that the Congress party, including some Union ministers, have rushed to the rescue of Vadra, who is a private individual. Even Law Minister Salman Khurshid has rushed to his rescue. In this fog of allegations and counter allegations,if a probe was to be instituted, the result of it is anybodys guess.

Fruity truth
WE MUST see the humour in Robert Vadras comments about the mango people (Robert Vadra mocks aam aadmi on Facebook, then beats retreat,IE,October 8). In one pithy phrase,he seems to have encapsulated the whole philosophy of the Congress party. The aam aadmi is the mango man,he seems to be as easily expendable as the fruit. For the sake of votes, the Congress promises policies that are presumably in the interest of the aam aadmi. When these prove difficult to implement effectively, the party conveniently turns its back on him.
