World leader
As the editorial Icon worship (IE,June 1) points out,we should be engaging with Mahatma Gandhis philosophy rather than making a fetish of his personal belongings. We showcase his items in museums instead of internalising what he said and did for us and taking his message forward. Also,Gandhis worldview has universal relevance. So let other parts of the world too have his mementos.

Money trail
Despite being riddled with scams, the governments decision to track and prosecute economic offenders is an indication of its earnestness to take proactive steps to unearth black money (Govt sets up panel on curbing black money,IE,May 28). That the communiqué comes on the heels of the government instituting a national study to quantify unaccounted wealth in and outside the country makes it sound that much more plausible. More than the amounts involved,it is the modus operandi employed by the perpetrators of the crime that is confounding. The impudence with which wrongdoers carry out such transactions belittles the laws of the land.

Customary spite
THIS is apropos the Customs department detaining actor Bipasha Basu at the airport because of the sunglasses, handbag and sandals that she had brought from her foreign trip (The bare necessities,IE,May 31). Authorities shouldnt embarrass travellers for bringing things of personal use.

Split wide open
THE Delhi administration is reportedly planning to split the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) into three corporations. This should have dawned on the authorities long ago. The MCD has become too unwieldy to administer. A division is necessary and,if need be,there can be an apex coordination body to facilitate equal development and organised growth. However, the Delhi government should take action only after consulting all political parties and stakeholders.

Food for thought
THE inter-ministerial group headed by economic adviser Kaushik Basu has recommended FDI in multi-product retail trade to reduce inflation. The objective is to create an organised retail sector with massive investments in modern marketing and distribution technology. This could also eliminate wastage in storage of food products and close the gap between the price the farmer gets and what the consumer pays for food items. But retail giants by themselves are not enough. If the government is serious about tackling food inflation,it should get down to implementing the comprehensive recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission.
