United we stand

Just a few days back, the nation witnessed one of the biggest ever anti-government movements after Independence. The country felt the need for ending corruption, and united against it. But where does the unity go when it comes to fighting terror? We need to press upon the government to give importance to the right to life with dignity.

Dream yatra

WHETHER L.K. Advani’s next rath yatra will succeed or not, time will tell ( ‘Advani out of the cold: arrest me… a sixth rath yatra’,IE,September 9). The motive of his next yatra is highlighting corruption at the Centre. An interesting question is: where will he start this yatra? The BJP-ruled states have also been blamed for corruption and bad governance. Advani’s statement clearly indicates his hunger for power. His dream to be prime minister lingers.

Refuelling

AIR INDIA is in the doldrums and needs to be privatised (‘Flying backwards’,IE,September 9). Badly punctured wheels need to be changed, not repaired. Air India’s problems are manifold. The carrier’s debts are rising. Its revenues take a hit as its senior staff members travel for free. Its fares are above the industry average and often a plane is made to fly with many seats vacant. Reduced competitive rates can attract passengers and increase revenues. Why should the government run such a loss-making business when it has other pressing problems to handle?

Reality check

THE article ‘A monsoon awakening’ (IE,September 9) is only the latest in an ongoing series of articles to argue, with increasing desperation and decreasing credibility, that it was ”middle-class insecurity” that supported Anna Hazare’s campaign. Are we seriously expected to believe that the cycle rickshaw pullers,chai-wallahs,pushcart vendors, dhobis, labourers etc.,who turned up to support Hazare across India represent the “middle class”? The truth is much simpler. Just about everyone in India is sick of corruption. While the rich and the middle classes can afford to bribe their way through life, the poor simply cannot.

Wrong timing

HOURS after the Delhi high court terror strike, the government announced compensation for the victims. Though it’s important to help victims’ families financially,is it not insensitive to announce it immediately after a tragedy? Assuring hassle-free medical assistance and justice is the need of the hour. Compensation could have been announced some days later.
