United we fall

* This refers to ‘19 MPs kill a Budget’ (IE,March 23). I must correct the headline: it is not 19 but 18 MPs who killed the rail budget as the 19th MP of the Trinamool Congress is Dinesh Trivedi himself, who proposed this budget. It is sad that the Congress meekly submitted to the blackmail at the cost of national interest. Another example is India’s vote for the UN resolution on the human rights violation in Sri Lanka. This was also done under threat from another coalition partner, the DMK,which has a significant number of MPs in Lok Sabha.

* Apropos ‘16 killed as train rams mini-truck’ (IE,March 21),the accident occurred near Hathras at an unmanned railway crossing. Sometimes drivers become reckless and don’t take precautions at such crossings. Representatives of the local police and panchayats must be tasked to sensitise people in this regard to avoid such mishaps. Volunteers may also be deployed during busy hours to keep a check on train movement and ensure safety. Overbridges at certain places will also help.

Oslo dicsord

* We now realise the commendable restraint with which the Norwegian government has behaved in the face of a hysterical onslaught by the Indian public and media. As the NRI children had been reportedly traumatised by violent quarrels in the house,it had taken the step of separating them from their biological parents,to be brought up in a more congenial atmosphere provided by another Indian household. We construed this as their arrogance and insensitivity to other cultures. The Indian government also wanted cheap publicity and allowed itself to be bamboozled by the media into committing a diplomatic faux pas.

* This refers to ‘Knee-jerk nation’ (IE,March 22). The Norway case has now undergone a U-turn. Indian people living in foreign countries should abide by the laws of the land. Do in Rome as the Romans do.

* Apropos ‘Seoul searching’ (IE,March 23),India and South Korea have recently found themselves on the same side on energy security in the backdrop of the US embargo on Iranian oil. Both nations should transition from economic linkages to a strategic partnership purely on bilateral merit and interoperability of resources. India could learn from South Korea’s experience in efficient port management,as well as tackle high population density through twinning metropolitan cities such as Delhi and Seoul or Mumbai and Busan.
