Opinion The good fight
The world has lost its tallest leader in the death of Nelson Mandela.
* The world has lost its tallest leader in the death of Nelson Mandela. He was a Gandhian at heart and in his deeds,as well as the only non-Indian to win the Bharat Ratna. His fight against Apartheid in South Africa is now famous. But he fought all racism, not just white racism. South Africa today is known as the rainbow nation and he brought grace and dignity to his country. Leaders around the world took inspiration from him. Nelson Mandela was a fighter to the core. He spent 27 years in prison but never thought of giving up his fight against racism. The entire globe salutes Mandela for his vision of peace and prosperity. Mandela may be no more but he will be remembered till the end of human history. May his soul rest in peace.

No justice
* It is deeply disappointing that the chief justice of India will not proceed further on the report submitted by the three-judge panel on the alleged sexual misconduct of retired Justice A.K. Ganguly (Unwelcome conduct of sexual nature: SC indicts A.K. Ganguly,IE,December 6). It leaves the victim high and dry after the ordeal of facing the inquiry committee and reliving the trauma. The reasons cited for no further action existed even before the process of inquiry was initiated.

False promises
* This refers to the editorial,A harsh winter (IE,December 6). It is really a shame that Uttar Pradeshs Samajwadi Party government has done nothing to help citizens forced into relief camps after the resent spate of communal violence in the state. On one hand,it has done very little to punish the culprits who caused the riots in Muzaffarnagar,on the other,it has not been able to provide adequate safety to those staying in the relief camps. The SP government talks about the welfare of minorities and tries to garner their votes at election time. But it leaves them to fend for themselves at a time when they need both moral and material support from the government. This is the height of hypocrisy. Such a government should not remain in office for long.

Futile effort
* This refers to Communal Violence Bill under attack,UPA amends it to include all religious groups (IE,December 6). From the start, the Communal Violence Bill has been plagued with suspicions about its political intent. While the bills original aim was to protect religious and linguistic minorities, the amendments to include all sections of society make the bill itself irrelevant. There are sufficient laws in place to cover violence and riots on any grounds.
