A bandh is no doubt an effective democratic tool,if enforced by the collective will of the people and not by parties. Political parties have used bandhs too often and for inconsequential matters. A bandh not only causes severe financial loss but it also defeats the very purpose for which it’s invoked because most people hate the loss of their livelihood and turn against it. Political parties often use them for displaying their organisational strength and their cadres resort to force to make it successful.

Great diplomats

The evocative and nostalgic piece ‘Anatoly Dobrynin, ambassador non-pareil’ by Inder Malhotra (IE,May 6) was timely. More than before, our fledgling republic needs top-notch diplomats. The world has become more dangerous and we have many threats to our national security. In this context, the long-serving erstwhile Soviet diplomat to the US,Anatoly Dobrynin’s life and style holds many lessons. It’s being said that during the height of the Vietnam War,then-US President Lyndon B. Johnson kept a close watch on visitors to the Soviet ambassador’s place. Many including the doyen of American journalism Walter Lippmann were trailed. A top diplomat serves the interests and agenda of his/ her nation stationed in any part of the world. The US was well-served by some diplomats stationed in New Delhi like Chester Bowles and John Kenneth Galbraith to name

a couple.

Police will do

This refers to the editorial ‘Strong, silent types’ (IE,May 7). It is correctly emphasised that service chiefs should not give statements in public about plans to fight anti-national elements. In fact, the operations against Maoists should be reviewed at the level of the home ministry. The CRPF has the primary role of fighting insurgency and deal with left-wing extremism and may be redeployed accordingly. The ITBP,SSB and BSF should remain on the borders to effectively check the cross-border movement and smuggling of arms and explosives for Maoists. Armed police units of states may be utilised to strengthen the efforts wherever necessary. With well-thought-out coordination and professional execution of operations, the need of army and air force help may not be felt.

Waste no time

Ajmal Kasab’s death sentence was a forgone conclusion and one thought he was given a fair trial by our judiciary (‘Death for Kasab’,IE,May 7). His crime deserved a death penalty which he eventually was sentenced to. However, there’s speculation that it would take years for his sentence to be executed. Looking at Kasab’s heinous crime, which was a threat to the entire nation,he deserves an immediate carrying out of the sentence, which should act as a deterrent to other offenders.
