Strangers at home
The students from the Northeast who fled back home in the last few days have suffered disruptions in their academic schedules. Who will make up for this? The state governments and the Centre should arrange for the students to return to their schools and ensure their security. Just the other day,we honoured our Olympics bronze medallist,Mary Kom,who is also from the Northeast. Today,we cant even make children from that region feel secure enough to live and study in any other part of their own country. Brij B. Goyal,Ludhiana
Prime candidates
n THE present logjam in Parliament, with the BJP-led opposition stalling all proceedings and baying for the prime ministers resignation, does not bode well for the coming months (Parl adjourned: Oppn corners UPA on CAG scam reports, demands PMs resignation,IE,August 21). Parties inclined to sit on the fence, like the Samajwadi Party, have also joined the clamour. In these difficult times, even the president is under fire. Former presidential hopeful P.A. Sangma has filed a suit in the Supreme Court, contesting the validity of President Pranab Mukherjees candidature.

Wind of blame
THE Maharashtra government has finally yielded to pressure and removed Mumbais police commissioner,Arup Patnaik (Mumbai violence takes toll, top cop shunted out,IE,August 24). Perhaps it is time for Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil to resign as well. A home minister has to take responsibility for the disruption of peace in his or her state. Patil must set an example and step down, rather than make scapegoats out of other people.

Chinese whispers
THIS refers to Moving to the City (IE,August 23) by Ashutosh Varshney. Chinas remarkable transformation from a rural hinterland to an economic powerhouse has happened largely because of an unhesitant embrace of free market policies and a committed political leadership that famously said,To get rich is glorious. Chinas rapid industrialisation has earned it the title, the factory of the world. Urbanisation is probably a consequence of this. Contrast this with Indias situation we are still debating our labour and land laws as well as foreign direct investment in critical areas and other key policy issues.

New strokes
CHETESHWAR PUJARA is here to stay (Post big-2,India find No.3,IE,August 24). His first Test century was well-structured,though hard-won. Some strokes were pleasing to the eye and his confidence was evident. Only four Tests old,Pujara has already won accolades. This reflects his hard work in the domestic circuit. Pujara is clearly suited for Test matches and this talent should be polished. Let us refrain from comparing him with the stalwarts of Indian batting so that his natural growth is not affected.
