Steep slope

* This refers to Sanjeev Grewal’s ‘The 100 per cent alarm’ (IE,June 24). In view of the growing competitiveness amongst students, admission seekers are facing a big challenge. After cut-offs are announced, eligible students from anywhere can seek admission to relevant colleges. This action is helpful to students from far-off places — earlier they had to make two trips, whereas now they will have to make just one. However, from this year, colleges have gone for higher marks in the first round. In the coming years, the number of students passing out will increase manifold because of the RTE,and the rush to graduate colleges is likely to increase. The only long-term remedy is to increase the number of degree colleges to meet the needs of students, besides improving the quality of education.

Boycott or BCCI?

* Geoffrey Boycott’s outburst against the BCCI on the DRS issue may hold some water (‘Outvote India: Boycott’,IE,June 24). Agreeably, the BCCI has the money power to influence decisions. But to scare people about the Indian board possibly misusing it is not correct. Also,India should take a pragmatic approach regarding the DRS. The first Test with the West Indies showed India were victims of wrong umpiring decisions. The DRS could have protected India from these errors. As of now,the DRS may have flaws but it’s at least one-up on the human error factor. Improvement of the DRS technology should be fast-tracked.

Water,water,where?

* Water-logging due to heavy rains in Mumbai is common (‘Parties blame each other for water-logging’,IE,June 24). The hapless citizen takes with a pinch of salt the civic chief’s words that “this year it will be a smooth ride since all steps needed to prevent water-logging have been taken”. This assurance is given every year; however, the ground reality is altogether different. Earlier, the authorities used to attribute water-logging to unprecedented heavy downpours. This year, politics has taken centrestage in view of the impending elections to the civic body. The civic body, run by the Shiv Sena-BJP,and the state government, run by the Congress-NCP,are pointing fingers at each other for dereliction of duty. The problem will remain unsolved.

Trust deficit

* The recent statement of the AICC general secretary,Digvijaya Singh,to the effect that Rahul Gandhi is a fit candidate for prime minister, was an atrocious attempt at sycophancy. The utterance was a challenge to the incumbent prime minister, who commands the confidence of the required number of parliamentarians. Digvijaya Singh’s statement also shows the trust deficit in the Congress party.
