In his article ‘Athletes can’t run’ (IE,October 23) Shekhar Gupta spelt out the necessity of politicians, bureaucrats and businessmen managing sports, although with little knowledge of the technicalities. They can produce excellent results, provided they shun corruption, arrogance and favouritism. Generally, sportspersons are self-made. Sports authorities spot talents and bring them into the competition. More serious effort is required to boost budding athletes and expand their peak span to fetch maximum awards. Only an honest and sincere approach can achieve this.

Who’s the hero?

Shekhar Gupta’s ‘Athletes can’t run’ endorsed the extant managing and administering of various sports bodies by politicians and businessmen. He goes on to praise their managerial abilities in sports by their brief yet successful track records. However,I beg to differ. The “golden” results of the CWG in Delhi should not and cannot be the sole criteria for giving them outstanding rankings as wonderful sports managers. The rich harvest of medals should rightfully and gracefully be attributed to our sporting talent. Yet,there could be many more talented, but not so lucky, sportspersons who might have been victims of the indifference of some of these politicians and bureaucrats/ businessmen. It’s strongly felt that our former sportspersons could not only prove their “mettle” but also perform better, provided they are given the opportunity.

Words out of time

I agree with the tenor of the editorial ‘Kept out of bounds’ (IE,October 23). Words not only communicate ideas and information but they also mirror the mindset and attitudes of people and their times. Their importance rises in proportion to the status of those uttering them. As such, the use of expressions like “keep” by the Supreme Court was inappropriate. We’re passing through a transition in social perceptions, wherein terms like “sex workers” and “differently enabled persons” have replaced the derogatory words used for long, reflecting our new respect for socially disadvantaged sections. If the court was unable to coin better substitutes,it could have qualified them by “so-called” or “for want of a better expression.”

Righteous and brave

India’s first woman additional solicitor general,Indira Jaising, deserves full appreciation for her courage to speak out against the use of expressions like “keep” and “one night stand” used in a Supreme Court verdict, and thereby raising her voice in favour of the dignity of women in our male-dominated society. The incident becomes even more praiseworthy because she could air her views during court-proceedings,without even caring for the fact that she is a state lawyer.
