Ridiculous defence

* Shekhar Gupta’s ‘The Arresting Moment’ (IE,July 23) rightly talks about Indian journalists, activists and academics who enjoyed the hospitality of Kashmiri separatist Ghulam Nabi Fai in Washington DC at his “now infamous conferences”. Fai has been arrested by the FBI on charges of being an illegal, unregistered lobbyist for Pakistan, funded by the ISI. Many of Fai’s Indian invitees were critical of Indian policy on Jammu and Kashmir. Shekhar Gupta has validly ridiculed their claim of ignorance of Fai’s activities and less than honest plea of innocence.

* The removal of Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi as vice-chancellor is unfortunate (‘Vastanvi forced out as V-C,says will take Darul Uloom to court’,IE,July 25). It will give the wrong signal on freedom of speech in civil society against the orthodox stand. Vastanvi’s remarks on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi were his personal opinion. Nevertheless, while Gujarat’s development is a landmark achievement for Modi, the Gujarat riots of 2002 will remain an indelible scourge in the state’s history. It is,however,a very sorry precedent that the members of the Majlis-e-Shoora acted rigidly. A person’s merit should be the parameter for a service. Muslim civil society, particularly religious heads, has the paramount responsibility to convey proper messages.

* It’s very sad and unfortunate that Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi was axed just because he praised Narendra Modi. One is unable to understand what was wrong if Vastanvi said Muslims too benefited from the Gujarat CM’s development initiative? Of course, what happened in 2002 under Modi’s watch was shocking. Sacking Vastanvi from the Darul Uloom will not only sully its image but also make it miss a golden opportunity to reinstate its liberal mindset for the country’s development.

Begin at home

* It’s intriguing why the BJP high command is still backing Yeddyurappa’s government. The BJP has been taking the moral high ground of late,in criticising the Union government on corruption. But by turning a blind eye to the alleged criminal nexus between the Karnataka CM and the Reddy brothers, the party has made a laughing stock of itself. By removing them from office the BJP can force the hand of the Congress to take similar action against its own.

* This refers to ‘These contested acres’ (IE,July 25). It’s a pity politicians inadvertently follow the dictum (mis)appropriated from the Bible: ‘from him that hath not, shall be taken away’. Despite being the largest landowners, the Union and state governments took away our fundamental right to property, whimsically implemented the land acquisition law and unnecessarily made litigious hitherto simple and curable problems.
