Lalu Prasad,as railway minister, was projected as a financial wizard. It’s now shocking to read the report ‘Turnaround derailed, this budget, railways stare at near-bankruptcy’ (IE,January 11). After Mamata Banerjee took over, she did give an impression that there was nothing wonderful that had happened during her predecessor’s tenure and people took that for a matter of ego,if not political jealousy. She spent most of her time in Kolkata rather than at Rail Bhavan. We now see a shocking report. No one could think that the financial fortunes of the railways could deteriorate so fast. People consider the railways a major service provider and would wish to see the present crisis blow over soon.

Your diagnosis of what ails the Indian railways and the cure are in order (‘Off track’,IE,January 11). Ministers using their powers for promoting their political and electoral interests and their own is the bane of development and good governance in India. In order to put the railways back on track and as a partial solution to the problem of misuse and misdirection of its resources by its minister, its budget can be made part of the Union budget,as was contemplated by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee last year.

It’s strange that a comparatively unknown Daniel Christian is bought for $900,000 while Brian Lara,Chris Gayle and Sourav Ganguly remain unsold in the IPL auction. The Kolkata Knight Riders, without Ganguly,do not look appealing, and I worry about their fate this season. While newcomers must be encouraged, experience cannot be ruled out altogether.

Fuelling fission

The two inheritors of the old Sudan will inherit a history of unabated violence that cost the parent nation numerous lives and opportunities ( ‘A new line in the sand’,IE,January 11). Young nations face challenges. What’s positive for the new nation in the south is the way it’s being created, far from the violent means the largest African nation was cursed with. Diplomacy is important. More important will be the resource-rich south keeping its word and sharing the petroleum revenue with the north.

Goodwill gone

Whatever goodwill Kapil Sibal enjoyed as HRD minister has been frittered away by his bizarre utterances on the 2G spectrum scam revenue loss. The CAG has rightly snubbed him and whatever he says now on any issue will carry little credibility. The whole country knows that in the Congress, loyalty gets morphed into abject sycophancy and what Sibal has done is the limit. He is bending over backwards. He has attempted to not only diminish the stature of the CAG but also obfuscate and confuse the PAC.
