Pacify the people

A clash in Assam has affected people in Mumbai and Bangalore (‘Amid attack fears, people from NE flee Bangalore’,IE,August 16). It is time the government came out and pacified the people, ensured that no section felt insecure. Action should also be taken against the rioters.

Apropos the editorial ‘Mamata vs institutions’ (IE,August 16),one is moved to lament the fall of West Bengal. A young man is branded “Maoist” by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee just because he had the courage to pose some questions to her at a public meeting. And now the judiciary is termed corrupt because some judgments had not been in favour of her government. Is it possible that Banerjee thinks she is still a street fighter and not a chief minister who should respect different opinions? Once it was said “what Bengal thinks today, the country thinks tomorrow” — the state has come a long way from those glorious days.

Mamata Banerjee’s acerbic style may have served her well in countering the Left in West Bengal. But by questioning the judiciary in an open forum, she has set an unhealthy trend in politics and statecraft. That she has no skeletons in her closet may explain the reason for such brashness. But riding roughshod over the pillars of the nation is not the way to rule a state.

Under the gavel

The judiciary seems intolerant of criticism. When a chief minister is crucified for raising her voice against the judiciary, the common man will not dare to make a complaint against the judges. Accountability of the judiciary is necessary.

Vilasrao Deshmukh had a great political trajectory — from a village sarpanch,he became the chief minister of Maharashtra. He was known for his oratorial skill, which helped him gain a mass following. The Congress will miss his political acumen.

Paradise lost

Here is an addendum to Pratap Bhanu Mehta’s ‘Fathers, who art in heaven’ (IE,August 15). Narada: Mohandas, were you alive, would you have gone on a fast against your Congress on corruption and black money? Mohandas: You shouldn’t forget that after Independence,I insisted that the job of the Congress was over. This Congress is not my Congress. I’d have certainly gone on a fast. Narada: Do you think Sonia and Manmohan would have accepted your demands? Mohandas: No way! And in his Independence Day address, the president would have accused me of creating chaos!
