This refers to the editorial ‘Visa teaser’. This is not the first time a Western country like Canada has resorted to such arrogance in denying visas to Indian nationals — that too members of responsible Central government organisations. When it suits them, they welcome them with open arms. Hence, let us face the unpleasant reality: these countries,in effect, regard us as soft targets; they feel they can get away with such unfriendly acts based on so-called human rights violations and other ridiculous charges, without any fear of reprisal. Can they do this to China?

Canadian immigration officials have unnecessarily commented on Indian security agencies as rightly pointed out in the editorial ‘Visa teaser’. India faces a grave threat from terrorists and insurgents who kill innocent civilians. Security agencies are duty-bound to protect the life and property of citizens. Canada must realise that Indian borders are quite sensitive unlike theirs. Friendly relations between the two countries should not only be maintained but strengthened further. The visa issue may be quickly resolved without affecting traditional close relations.

The sinking of a South Korean warship, allegedly by a torpedo launched by North Korea, portends an ominous sign for peace in Asia. Adding fuel to the fire are the remarks made by the US secretary of state. With both sides adopting threatening postures, the region may be thrown back to the dark days of turmoil witnessed during the early ‘50s. Wiser counsel among the leadership in Seoul and Pyongyang, coupled with a timely intervention by the UN,may yet keep the situation from worsening.

This refers to the editorial ‘The hostile hermit’. History is repeating itself. Hitler,in his September 26,1938 speech declared that his “patience is now at the end”. Today, the same intimidation is again proclaimed in North East Asia. Despite its stark economic condition, the presumptuous, aggressive and fretful attitude of North Korea is not only dangerous for the region but also for the world.

PM capable

More than one apparently contradictory conclusion can be drawn from the prime minister’s press conference. Manmohan Singh was confident in asserting that he’ll continue,to complete the “unfinished agenda”,but he was candid in acknowledging the vulnerability of his tenure in his willingness to vacate the chair when his party wanted. He candidly described his priorities, from Naxalism and inflation to Pakistan. Yet,he didn’t say how they’ll be tackled, aware of the calibre and degree of cooperation from the cabinet thrust upon him by coalition partners. Behind these superficial inconsistencies, the message is clear: India has a visionary, capable and determined PM.
