Odd man out

This refers to ‘Learning to say yes’ by C. Raja Mohan (IE,November 10). Obama’s visit has been a historic event in many respects. Obama has shown genuine concern for our problems. With his characteristic sincerity of expression, forthrightness and communication skills,Obama has brought the two democracies closer. He mesmerised Indian citizens, media and politicians alike. He has, however, failed to address one of our major concerns: supplying sophisticated weaponry to Pakistan runs counter to his desire for India to play a stabilising role in the region.

Obama’s invitation to restructure the world order is worth accepting. In ‘Learning to say yes’,C. Raja Mohan rightly pointed out that rather than speculating on Obama’s statements on India’s supremacy,we should join the US and maintain a reciprocal relationship. Both countries share a common vision of peace in South Asia, both are victims of terrorism, both governments are democratic. How then can their paths be different?

Coalition collisions

The editorial ‘Raja must go’ (IE,November 11) has rightly advised the UPA to show the telecom minister,A. Raja, the door. But who will gather the courage to touch a person protected by M. Karunanidhi? Raja is aware the Congress will not dare rub him the wrong way in its own political interest. Partners in any coalition are always interested in making hay while the sun shines. They have no permanent loyalties and our politics is very lucrative for opportunists and turncoats. The likes of Ashok Chavan and Raja will continue to thrive as long as our political parties keep their partisan interests above everything else.

Cleaning up

M. Karunanidhi’s defence of A. Raja borders on the ridiculous. The DMK makes a claim to portfolios which are cash cows and the Congress concedes. Pray, what will the prime minister say to the DMK overlord? He will only request that Raja be eased out of the cabinet. And that plea may or may not be accepted. It is unfortunate that this matter has been in the news for long, and yet there is no sense of guilt on the part of the minister or his party, nor any action to nab the culprits. In tackling corruption, our higher judiciary can play an important role: dispense with technicalities when,on a prima facie basis, the corrupt are caught. And,indeed,if it can take suo motu action,we can tackle this menace.
