The rapid manner in which all the security agents of the US stepped up their search operations following the discovery of an unexploded bomb in New York, rewarded ultimately by the arrest of the culprit,is commendable. Our security agents should take note of this swiftness and emulate it. Even more important was the alertness of a street vendor who notified the police of something wrong in the car. This factor deserves the notice of all Indian citizens.

This is with reference to ‘Pak arrests 7 for links to Shahzad’. Suspected New York bomber Shahzad Faisal is said to have confessed to attending terror camps in Pakistan. What is intriguing is this: will this expose Pakistan’s double standard? In the past India had revealed evidence on the existence of terror training camps but Pakistan remained in denial. Now,when the American authorities are seen investigating the NY bomber case,Pakistan has suddenly become proactive by arresting a few suspects.

Death not enough

This is in response to your well-investigated report ‘Death for Kasab’. The court has given a clear message that terrorism has no place in a sophisticated community. Any intimidation to India’s security from within and from outside should be treated the same way. Death sentence for Kasab is not an adequate punishment. In fact,it is a relief for him. He should have been awarded a life sentence, kept in jail till his natural death. Let’s hope the process of judicial review by the courts also proceeds in top gear and the verdict is carried out at the earliest.

Serving Kashmir

This refers to the report ‘From violent Valley childhood to UPSC crest’. While applauding a young Kashmiri man’s outstanding success in topping the civil services examination, one cannot avoid seeing it as a major slap on the face of Kashmiri separatists. Shah Faisal, from a village school, whose father was killed by militants, has implicitly rejected the philosophy of bigotry and dissociation from India, showing Kashmiri youth the path of integration for upward mobility.

Tolerating two

Mamata’s Banerjee’s casual approach to her work as railway minister is equalled by the narrow,family-oriented behavior of the DMK supremo. That party also, therefore, needs to be removed from the government of Manmohan Singh. Dr Singh and the Congress president should not forget that we can see that tolerating these two is being done at the cost of the nation and not just the Congress party.
