New & healthy

* This refers to the editorial ‘One verdict is in’ (IE,March 6). It’s heartening to see the high voter turnouts in the recent state assembly elections. This shows that there’s now a vibrant democracy in the country. With a large number of young voters participating in the democratic process enthusiastically,it’s clear that the time for the older ways of governance is over now.

* The record turnout in the five state elections indicates the increasing political awareness in India. In 2007,when Mayawati won,it was a clear signal to the “goonda raj” image of the SP. In 2012,a people aspiring for development and corruption-free environment ordered Mayawati to go.

* The higher voter turnout in the state elections, thanks to the unfailing vigilance and the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct by the Election Commission,is certainly a boost to our democracy. However,it’s the first of three essential stages. Stage two is the voter rising above all considerations and going for the right people and real issues; stage three is political parties being compelled to work for the larger good of society.

* Bihar in 2010,Tamil Nadu,West Bengal,Kerala in 2011,and now these five states in 2012,have shown a tremendous increase in voting percentage. The credit must go to both the electorate and the Election Commission. The EC has not only ensured free and fair elections but has made it a routine affair. It has also contributed immensely by creating awareness about voting. But the EC needs to ensure there isn’t much of a gap between polling phases,as it hinders developmental work.

Advent of Akhilesh

* The writing on the wall was clear to the BSP,and so its loss was along predictable lines. Both the Congress and the SP got their young leaders to campaign. While the Congress had its leader imposed on the cadres,in the SP’s case,it was a cadre-based leader in Akhilesh Yadav. Akilesh has proved by his dignified electioneering that he has a bright political future.

Entertainment polls

* Chief Election Commissioner,S.Y. Quraishi, was right in calling opinion and exit polls a source of entertainment. The divergence of findings in the assembly elections resulted in the inclusion of every possible scenario — so that at least one of them could claim the veracity of its analytical tools. In the intervening days between the last phase and the declaration of results, the electronic media had a field day roping in politicians and experts. What made them not wait a couple of days had to do with TRPs.
