Who do we want as the president of India? Someone of impeccable character, who is not a politician,is sagacious, wise, mature, secular, articulate, personable, well educated and experienced in governance with a thorough knowledge of constitutional matters. No one fits this description better than Gopalkrishna Gandhi. As president,he would do the nation proud, and Tara Gandhi would be the perfect first lady, representing in her person the best and most cherished Indian values. I hope,in this case,Parliament will rise above petty politics to choose this candidate who surely will be acceptable to all.

Gag the order

APROPOS Arun Jaitley’s ‘The Censor Bench’ (IE,April 23),in a democratic system, the role of the judiciary is to ensure people’s constitutional guarantees and check their violations. But when the judiciary decides what should be published/debated,it smothers the very spirit of democracy. People have the right to air their views on issues like governance and corruption, even if that seems defamatory to an individual or organisation. In such a case, you can sue that person in a court of law. Issuing gag orders is undemocratic.

Going to town

ONE fails to understand why the Punjab government, already in heavy debt, has mooted a State Urban Development Mission at a cost of Rs 8,635 crore (‘Punjab to set up State Urban Development Mission’,IE,April 19). There are the Punjab Urban Development Authority,Improvement Trusts, the town planning department and municipal corporations. Is there any dearth of talented civil engineers and allied professionals in these? Agricultural land may be acquired from farmers and sold at higher rates to urban developers, but this will be counterproductive for debt-ridden Punjab. It will lead to an influx of people from the rural to the urban sector and put pressure on existing resources.

Non-teaching staff

THIS refers to ‘Walk the Talk’ with Kapil Sibal (IE,April 17),where the state of education in India was discussed. There is another regrettable aspect to India’s education system. Teachers in government schools are made to do odd jobs like updating voter lists, conducting census and manning polling booths. Their time and energy are being misused.

Being magnanimous

THERE is a section of Pakistanis who are inspired by India and don’t envy its rise as an economic power. This section wants to engage with India and reap the benefits of mutual growth. India should reach out to this constituency. This will create goodwill and resolution of some issues like Siachen and Sir Creek may become easier.
