* This refers to the article,‘In PM mode,Modi tones down Pakistan stand’ (IE,September 16). Narendra Modi,as the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate, has to cease to be a rabble-rouser and tone down many of his earlier positions. He has to temper his rhetoric against India’s neighbouring countries. He must speak with gravity and substance if he is to convince people. He must also desist from pursuing a Hindutva agenda. No doubt, people hit hard by high prices, corruption and the misgovernance of the Congress-led UPA are angry and want a change of government. But they are not going to vote for mandir,Article 370 and the uniform civil code. They are impressed by Modi’s image as a clean, strong and committed leader. But he must strike up a rapport with all sections of society and convince them of his party’s commitment to inclusive development,as well as clean and efficient governance.

The PM’s speech

* By stating that he would be happy working under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership,Manmohan Singh has given another downward push to his fast-diminishing stature (‘Will be very happy to work under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership: Manmohan Singh’,IE,September 7). His statement also assures the nation,if any more assurance was required, that his remaining months in office will be a damp squib.

* While debating whether children under six should be taught in their respective mother tongues,it is important to recognise that this is not a simple choice to make (‘Speaking in tongues’,IE,September 16). Whether we like it or not,English is the language of technology, and the world is increasingly driven by technology. Have our various Indian languages evolved enough,in terms of lexicon as well as grammar,to accommodate the basics of technological knowledge? If not,English should be taught along with the mother tongue at the primary level — as indeed,is often the case today. Above all,we must understand that the ability to comprehend and use English cannot suddenly be grafted on to children at the middle- or senior-school level.

* This refers to the editorial ‘Not at this rate’ (IE,September 16). Raghuram Rajan has demonstrated his ability to tackle the bleeding economy with the measures he has adopted since he took over as the RBI governor. The markets have responded positively and the rupee has bounced back. Speculation on the monetary policy will cause the market to swing wildly, which is not good for the economy. Investors need to keep calm and trust the new governor. There can be no debate on the fact that manufacturing must increase, but we need to keep in mind the liquidity that will flood the market if rates are relaxed.
