Just deserts
*Most citizens will agree that the armed forces are doing a good job on the rescue work in Uttarakhand (Uttarakhand: Army airlifts first group of 1,000 pilgrims from Kedarnath,IE,June 22). They have always risen to challenges, whether on the battleground or during peacetime. The Indian people always appreciate the forces work. However, its sad that there isnt as much support shown to the forces in their fight for their own rights. The government has denied lakhs of army pensioners their rightful dues for more than two decades now. Retired officers have had to fight cases all the way up to the Supreme Court against their own government, and even though they won,the government is not implementing the SC order fairly. The retired officers are now about to file a contempt petition for relief. Armymen are ready to do their best for the country, and this is what they get in return.

RIP Gandolfini
*This refers to Missing Tony Soprano by Lee Siegel (IE,June 22). I completely agree with the writer on the universal resonance of James Gandolfinis Tony Soprano, even though I have never set foot in the US,let alone New Jersey. Soprano was a character that you felt an instant connect with; he was able to convince you about the righteousness of who he is and what he does. He had the kind of people-management skills that every business manager probably craves. The multifaceted Soprano reminds one that in the web of ones private, professional and social lives, there is no such thing as right or wrong. He may not have had the grandeur of a Corleone but he was contemporary, grounded, vulnerable and frighteningly real. Rest in peace,Tony Soprano.

Greed and shame
*This refers to Tales of horror (IE,June 22). We must strongly condemn the deeds of people who are taking undue advantage of the situation in Uttarakhand to line their pockets. It is heartbreaking and shameful to read how low people will sink.

*This refers to Parrikar has exposed Modi: Cong (IE,June 21). In their reaction to Parrikars remarks, the Congresss spokespersons seem to have conveniently picked up only the parts that suit them. They have not taken note of the qualifying remarks that the Goa CM made. Parrikar said that while Godhra was a blot and he is not defending it,that does not mean you put the blame on a particular person. The administration collapsed. The Godhra incident is similar to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that took place under the Congresss watch. The Congress should remember that people who live in glass houses shouldnt throw stones.
