Just a game
* This refers to Keep to cricket (IE,March 30). The cricket diplomacy undertaken by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is not a well-thought-out decision; it is more of an instinctive initiative. In the past too, former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee had taken the gamble, but it did not pay off. So we should not expect anything more than a cracker of a game.

Back from the brink
* In the new tiger census, there is good news regarding the conservation of tigers (Spot the tiger,IE,March 28). We have to fight with our own species, homo sapiens, for other species. It is a tough battle against poaching, encroachment and deforestation which are great threats to tiger habitats. Thanks to the media for creating awareness among the people about the depleting population of tigers. We hope such conservation efforts are not limited to tigers only but are also extended to other endangered species.

Only human
* The report Letters suggest Gandhi was bisexual, says book by Pulitzer Prize author (IE,March 29) has predictably led to a storm. TV channels have already started debating the issue in which the books revelation has been termed malicious. Your paper reported that Union Law Minister Veerappa Moily has said the Centre may ban the book. That would be counter-productive and unwise. The books author,Joseph Lelyveld,a veteran journalist and author has criticised the Western media for highlighting certain aspects. Lets treat Gandhi as human being, with the strengths and weaknesses of humans. Why are we so touchy about everything that is revealed or claimed?

Queen of hearts
* Your editorial Studio act (IE,March 25) is a warm tribute to Elizabeth Taylor. She belonged to the spotlight; in fact, she owned it with an adjective exhausting beauty that she accessorised with her strange fascination for over-the-top baubles. Beginning as a child star, she gained fame for her talent, glamour and beauty as well as a much publicised private life, which included eight marriages. Her grand lifestyle peppered with scandals had more twists and turns than any Hollywood blockbuster. She lived passionately and remained true to her larger-than-life persona to the very end, mirroring the saga of Cleopatra, whom she brought to life on screen with Richard Burton in 1963. Indeed, age cannot wither her. You have rightly said that with her passing,Hollywood has lost the last of its golden girls.
