* This refers to Rahul Gandhi visit rescheduled for fear of dissidents (IE,May 24). After his statement on being strict against indiscipline in the party, would it not have been more appropriate if Rahul had attended the meeting on the scheduled dates and faced the dissidents? This constant insulation from party problems has created a tremendous disconnect between senior leaders and party cadre. Dissidence within the party is real and must be heard if the issues are to be addressed.

A new cycle
* THE governments decision to allow quadricycles in India is interesting (On four wheels,IE,May 24). Indians badly need commercial vehicles that are small, light and low-speed. Indian roads need vehicles that occupy less space, and create minimum noise and air pollution. Safety and stability are key factors for public transport vehicles targeting the huge market of commuters in large cities. The quadricycle is already in use in Europe, but the Indian government has made it compulsory for quadricycles to be run on a commercial basis only. The availability of a first aid box in the vehicles will sooth nervous souls. The real test for the quadricycle will be the reception it gets when it hits Indian roads. Whether people are ready to part with the good old autorickshaws and taxis will decide the quadricycles fate in India.

Off side
* I FULLY endorse the views expressed in the editorial Step down and aside (IE,May 24),asking the BCCI chief N. Srinivasan and the IPL chairman Rajiv Shukla to resign. It is most unfortunate that the BCCI violated the constitution to bend its rules and allow Srinivasan to have commercial interests in spite of heading the cricketing body. All those involved in the bending of rules must be identified and brought to justice. It is also shocking that Srinivasans son-in-law,
who runs the Chennai Super Kings team has also been implicated. Rajiv Shukla must take moral responsibility.
This scandal has shamed billions of cricket fans the world over.

* THIS refers to Ashutosh Varshneys article Possibilities of redemption (IE,May 23). It was a forthright and accurate analysis of India-Pakistan relations. While Jinnah stressed the two-nation theory,he did not make any effort to unite Muslims apart from urging anti-Indiaism. After his death, subsequent Pakistani rulers have followed this strategy. It would now be prudent for India to extend a hand of friendship to Nawaz Sharif, who wants to bring about a correction in Pakistans
policy towards India.
India has nothing to lose.
