( IE,September 15). The CRS report has not exaggerated about Narendra Modi. He has proved to be a strong administrator and promoter of fast-paced development and growth. India needs a dedicated person like him as prime minister. However,it all depends on the trial court judgment concerning the 2002 Gujarat riots. If there’s substantive evidence against Modi,he’s out of the race for PM. But if he’s acquitted the BJP must help improve his image and project him as the party’s prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 general elections.

Change redux

THE financial crisis of 2008,for a brief moment, promised a thorough financial clean-up and reining in of the shenanigans that had become the norm in the world of finance (‘Clarifying a crisis’,IE,September 14). Three years later, the only thing that’s changed is the way bonuses are paid. The first reaction by many in the Indian government was to pontificate. Instead of drawing lessons from the disaster and reforming, the focus is on riding on 20-year-old reforms. The actions of the US government and the EU are beyond our control, but we need to seize the opportunities created by this crisis to learn and adapt. The goodies from the 1991 reforms are running out and the government is trying to harvest an old crop. For things not to remain the same, they have to change.

Bad sport

EVEN though the sports bill couldn’t clear the cabinet stage,it has successfully started a debate. At the start, the debate has met with arrogant responses from the BCCI. The treatment meted out to our winning hockey team is humiliating. There should be a tax on the BCCI. Its cash registers are ringing because of the popularity of cricket in India. It needs to realise that cricket is growing at the cost of other sports,so it shouldn’t hesitate from shouldering the responsibility to promote other sports, for which it must be taxed.

THIS refers to the editorial ‘Being adult’ ( IE,September 14 ). You have rightly admonished the Kannada film chamber of commerce for displaying its male chauvinism. Are we in the 21st century? Bodies like khap panchayats, etc have no legal powers, yet they behave like extra-constitutional authorities, taking upon themselves the role of adjudicator, thus undermining our legal system. Discrimination against women is all-pervasive.
