Great expectations

People like Aurobindo were great leaders only because they candidly admitted to,and then overcame, their all-too-human frailties. Our society’s unwillingness to acknowledge these frailties in leaders, and our propensity to instead rail against those who might point these out to us,are born of a shallowness in culture and education. We only know to elevate a leader to the status of a deity. — R.P. Subramanian,New Delhi

THE avalanche that killed several Pakistani soldiers at Siachen last week has brought to light the human and economic cost of sustaining a two-decade-long conflict in the harsh terrain. Siachen has claimed the lives of many Indian and Pakistani soldiers and is one of world’s most pointless military deployments. Both countries incur huge costs in maintaining their troops there, even as both have millions living below the poverty line.

Where’s the metro?

THE Pune Municipal Corporation’s 2012-13 budget doesn’t have any fund allocation for the Pune Metro, which is really sad (‘No funds for Metro, civic body to focus on infra under JNNURM’,IE,April 11). Although all political parties feel there is an urgent need for a metro line in this fast-growing city, none of them is serious about it. The metro proposal had been sent to the Centre for final sanction almost ten years ago now but little has changed. The cost of building a metro is escalating every day.

London eye

THE editorial ‘Just like Vijender’ (IE,April 13) carries valuable advice for the Indian boxers going for the London Olympics. After intense training, they have qualified for their dream contest. The road ahead is tough. They must devote their time to disciplined practice. They must also stay away from the distractions of glamour and celebrity. Like Arjun, they must see only their target. Only then can they bag medals at the Olympics

Bird of passage

IN response to ‘UP vs UPA’ (IE,April 7),I would say the main reason for the Congress’s dismal performance in UP is its political leadership’s failure to offer concrete solutions to people’s problems. Rahul Gandhi’s much-hyped stay in a hovel did not convince the people that he was any different from other birds of passage. He must realise that whirlwind tours during elections can bring him crowds but not votes. People listen to him mainly out of curiosity. Rahul also made the mistake of allowing others to speak for him on sensitive matters. The editorial was right to advise him that while focusing on revamping the Congress in UP,he should not lose sight of the precarious condition of the UPA.
