For the people

The monsoon session of Parliament will in all likelihood see only pitched battles between the ruling coalition and the opposition over the issue of corruption. Members of Parliament should allow the House to function in a democratic manner; and should not stall proceedings. The Lokpal Bill, the Women’s Reservation Bill, the Land Acquisition Bill, the GST Bill are all waiting to be debated and finalised. Let the representatives of the people act sensibly and responsibly during the session — that’s all we can ask for.

All that’s left out

The government draft of the Lokpal Bill excludes the prime minister and the judiciary from its purview, but it says nothing about putting in place a mechanism to watch out for their functioning in accordance with the covenant (‘Govt Lokpal Bill: PM and judiciary out,7-yr limit in’,IE,July 29). This issue needs to be addressed. As regards the judiciary’s exclusion,it’s essential that the Judicial Standards and Accountability Bill is passed. The exclusion of MPs’ conduct in Parliament has no rationale because, for a democracy to work, its lawmakers need to be law-abiding citizens, with punishment for those who break the law.

Waste of time?

It’s not wrong to say that Lokpal has become Jokepal. The government has never been serious and sincere about the Lokpal Bill. If lawmakers had been honest, and carried out their national duties sincerely, there would have been no need for a Lokpal. There’s no doubt that under the UPA government, corruption, scams, terror attacks, inflation, etc have all increased manifold. The UPA spends most of its time and energy criticising the BJP. The BJP is not the national issue, and should be left to the wisdom of the electorate, who should never be underestimated. The UPA should learn to respect and accept that fact.

A CM’s job

Apropos the editorial ‘Berth pangs’ (IE,July 29),as chief minister,Mamata Banerjee cannot afford to be footloose. She has to keep her feet on the ground to run her government efficiently. In the state,it is now her turn to keep the Congress in good humour by taking it along on all important issues. In no case should she try to be too-clever-by-half by dividing the state Congress leaders through patronage and favours. She may hold all the aces but cannot play every one of them without the approval of the Congress. At present,Banerjee’s main concern should be fulfilling her electoral promises so as to keep the Left at bay for a long time.

Mamata Banerjee seems to be unilaterally deciding who should go where. The protocol is to offer posts to the alliance party, not its members. However, the Bengal Congress is not a united entity at all. That the party is asking certain people to step down could point at how other interested sections of the Congress were not comfortable with the appointments.
