For example

This refers to the editorial ‘After the quake’ (IE,March 15). There is no doubt about Japan’s ability to deal with such natural disasters; they have been doing so for many years because of their geographic location. But this disaster is strong enough to shake anyone’s body and spirit. But we hope Japan will triumph from this one as well. But the tragedy throws a big question to us: what if something like this strikes India? Would we be able to cope?

I condemn the psychology that brings about ghettoes (‘No Jamia ghetto, please’,IE,March 15). It puts roadblocks in the process of the evolution of a free and responsible society. What irks me is that such enclosed spaces,so far restricted to minority schools and now extended to higher education, come in the way of our objective of creating of a pluralistic society.

Interpreting right

I read ‘The more they remain the same’ (IE,March 14) with mixed feelings of elation and sadness. Like the author, one is familiar with educated,self-confident,young Indian Muslim professionals making a mark in various fields. It is a heartening scenario, contrary to the stereotypical profile of the community. However, the writer’s projection of the darker side with orthodox elements was depressing.

Financial excess

The editorial,‘Splashing out’ (IE,March 14) rightly argues that instead of “doing away with the MPLADS,the government has infused it with fresh money”,from Rs 2 crore to Rs 5 crore per MP. Of late, the nation has been crying that such funds are being misused by the politicians in the name of addressing citizens’ concerns. Such schemes should be withdrawn immediately as they are a burden on the national exchequer. Moreover,as the editorial points out,“this work bleeds into the administration’s role, and pushes the legislator into executive functions, rather than monitoring implementation and delivery”.

Source of energy

TAKING a lesson from Japan’s nuclear disaster due to the earthquake/ tsunami,I feel India should go for other sources of energy because these nuclear reactors are not safe. It might be better we go for solar, wind and hydel

energy. The progress may be slow but they are safe.

Silly point

M.S. DHONI’s finding faults with batsmen for the debacle at Nagpur is stating the facts. His grudging admission of his own failing in sending Nehra to bowl the last over instead of Harbhajan is striking. Had Dhoni gracefully admitted his error first and then blamed the batsmen for their recklessness,it would have enhanced his reputation.
