• This refers to ‘Caught partying with gangsters, five Mumbai cops suspended’. The deep and unholy nexus between the Mumbai police and mafia dons was exposed following the leaked video footage. That all senior police officials were suspended with immediate effect — and an inquiry into the episode ordered — indicates that such action is meant to display the state government’s efficiency. But there’s a need to know how many IPS and state police officers are on the payroll of the mafia. That task falls upon the state intelligence wing. But unfortunately, even many in the intelligence community are inducted into the same corruption. Perhaps the system is beyond remedy. Why can’t there be clear laws to terminate the services of tainted cops? The Union home minister must take a serious view of the matter.

• That the Union home ministry has decided upon auto-withdrawal of medals from police personnel later convicted for criminal offences is welcome. A similar withdrawal of honours can also be applied to those receiving civilian honours, but later convicted by a court or found guilty of any financial crime. In fact, only cases cleared by the intelligence and tax authorities should be put before awards committees rather than getting them cleared after an award committee’s approval.

• Since it’s ideology, policy and practice that distinguish one political party from another, there is a good case for not only the CPI and the CPM to merge but also parties like the NCP and Congress (Gandhian ideals); the BSP,RPI and LJP (Dalit and backward castes cause); SP and RJD (socialism). What prevents them from doing so is the personality cult and power dynamics. Sharad Pawar,on joining the Congress, will lose his bargaining prowess. Mayawati and Ram Vilas Paswan will not get along. Mulayam Singh and Lalu Prasad are rivals with perhaps prime ministerial ambitions. Since the personality bug is yet to sting the CPI and CPM,they could take the lead by effecting their merger.

Fair wind

• ‘Lapping up liquidity’ has advocated the perfect prescription for the RBI to increase the CRR in a phased manner to tighten monetary policy without hurting growth. It’s interesting that commercial banks are providing loans to the RBI rather than lending to customers, even when interest rates are expected to go up in the future. Further,if Indian exports continue to grow, the flow of dollars will increase. It’ll appreciate the Indian rupee and will further increase liquidity in the domestic market.
