It is good news for Indians that Sharad Pawar,Union minister of agriculture has become the president of ICC. But it is equally disappointing news for the agriculture sector. It is practically not possible for any individual to give equal justice and sufficient time for two such huge responsibilities. Indian agriculture confronts many problems like farmers suicides,load-shedding,uncertainty of monsoon, decreasing water table,Bt seeds etc. It needs a comprehensive plan and a determined leader. But in the last few years our agriculture minister has been working more for the glamorous field of cricket. India now needs a full-time agriculture minister.

Cheap and best
Football is the worlds cheapest sport for beginners,as you only need a ball to play the game. It can be played even without shoes as thousands of children do in our country. The government should popularise this sport here. We have the potential to become world-beaters but the motivation is missing. Build a football academy from scratch and spot young talent. Skills will come with training and hard work.

Names and intentions
The Andhra Pradesh governments decision to rename Kadapa district after YSR sets a wrong precedent. It might open the floodgates,as districts are renamed by every ruling party in memory of its leaders who were astute politicians. It is not proper to name a district after a politician, however great and successful he might be. In erstwhile Saurashtra state in Gujarat, districts were named after certain surnames of the-then ruling class. The state government removed these names and renamed them with no favour to any person or community. The decision in AP seems to be purely political, aiming at stealing the show from YSRs son.

Basic consideration
The editorial titled The forgetting (IE,July 7) on the plight of former trade union leader and stormy petrel of Indian politics George Fernandes being summoned to court to make an appearance is very timely. It is unfortunate that the learned judge deemed it necessary to call him. It reveals a callous attitude,as George Fernandes is suffering from the dreaded Alzheimers disease which progressively takes away ones memory and identity as time rolls by. It is a really sad day that in his sunset years, the well-known leader is surrounded by two women and his brothers, who are fighting viciously to have him under their control. One has seen how former US president Ronald Reagan and former world heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali suffered from Alzheimers,an ailment for which there is no cure. Perhaps in future, the courts will be more considerate to individuals who are ravaged by diseases like Alzheimer or any form of dementia.
